In a spoof of a scene from The Sound of Music (1965), Peter calls his children using a boatswain's pipe (or whistle or call; "boatswain" is pronounced, and sometimes spelled, "bo's'un"). The boatswain's pipe has been in use by navies around the world since at least since the 13th century. Its two tones (high-pitched and lower), sounded in sequence, can produce over a hundred signals.
This episode is the last that aired before 9/11.
Peter's lawyer is an homage to Richard Libertini's character General Garcia in the 1979 Peter Falk/Alan Arkin classic 'The In-Laws'.
