The original broadcast in 1969 was preceded by a 4.5 minute introduction by Pollo Hamburger in which he explains the rules of medieval tournaments as written by René of Anjou.
Writer Gerard Soeteman visited the set during filming of this installment, and was put into costume to small play the part of the Astrologer when the original actor did not show up.
Prodcution on the series was shut down prematurely because after spending approximately three times more than it's scheduled budget. Two stories remained unfinished,, so this story was split into two episodes and the thirteenth slot was filled by the documentary Rond Floris (1969). When the series was remade in Germany, the same screenplay was presented as a single episode, as originally planned: Der byzantinische Becher (1975).
Colorized photographs from this installment were used in the storybook titled "Floris en het verraad van Oldenstein" (1969), published by 'De Geïllustreerde Pers N.V.' In this book, writer Frans de Regt invented a new story based on pictures taken from various different episodes.
