Sister Bertrille's Former Boyfriend
JordanThomasHall3 September 2018
Sister Bertrille is suffering from exhaustion after covering for everyone at the convent stricken by the 48-hour virus. Reverend Mother Placido arranges with the manager of the Hotel Calamar, a generous patron of the convent, for Sister Bertrille to spend a relaxing weekend at the property. Sister Jacqueline accompanies her. From afar, toy manufacturer Randy Putnam (Dwayne Hickman, the title character in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis") recognizes Sister Bertrille in her former life as Elsie, a former girlfriend. They both recall themselves as the suave leader of the relationship. He is attending a convention at the hotel with his business associate Tom Grant (Bob Hastings, "McHale's Navy"). When Randy broke up with her she mentioned becoming a nun to get over it, and seeing her as a nun he feels guilty, sending her many expensive gifts at the convent. His fiancee Liz Martin (Cynthia Pepper, the title character in "Margie") arrives and is upset by what is going on. Randy calls off the engagement after he sees Sister Bertrille fly, fracturing his mental health that has been in analysis for two years. Liz has a heart-to-heart with Sister Bertrille who once again recalls the past differently.

The episode is a nice change of pace, as we see Sisters Bertrille and Jacqueline interacting in an entirely new setting. It's somewhat surprising to see them in bathing suits, with Field's character reminiscent of her previous series, "Gidget". The storyline and flashbacks indeed have a Gidget feel. Not a lot of comedy, but a nice story that allows us to know someone from Sister Bertrille's past.
