A lesson in humility.
gramawphyl4 December 2011
What an unexpected Gem I saw this morning on Antenna TV. Orrin Dooley is the kind of guy I'd like for a friend and neighbor. I really miss those days when our TV shows were quiet, respectful, and had a moral. I hope I can find more of these segments on DVD. Orrin Dooley is a naive farm boy back from the big war. He's a man in a hurry with no time to look back. He won't speak of what happened in the war because it's over. He hurries to a village dance and takes an instant shine to the one room school teacher, but she doesn't yet reciprocate. She hurts his feelings considering him ignorant. His answer was to enter 5th grade on the GI Bill. He befriends the shunned daughter of the town drunk. The principal of the school is a social climber who has no qualms about humiliating the less fortunate. Orrin's insight and gentle ways win the respect of the town folk, but most especially, the teacher.
