- Willie Dante owns a bar and gambling house called Dante's Inferno. One night, the wife of an acquaintance tells Willie that her husband has threatened her. Willie comforts her and sends her home, but she turns up dead the next day.
- Willie Dante (Dick Powell) owns a night club and gambling hall called Dante's Inferno. One night, he encounters a distraught woman (Virginia Grey) in his club, and she claims that her husband, Steve Caspery (William F. Leicester), is going to kill her. Steve has been stealing from his racketeer business partner, Max Bruno (Marvin Miller), and he's afraid that his wife will spill the beans to Max. Willie knows Max because he's a regular visitor to Dante's Inferno and owes Willie a lot of money.
The next day, Caspery's wife is found bludgeoned to death, and the police question Willie because they found a book of matches from his club on the victim. As the last person known to have seen her, Willie is asked to identify the body, but he can't be sure because the face is beaten beyond recognition. But he tells the police that Mrs. Caspery implicated her husband the previous evening.
When Willie returns home, Bruno's thug Tony (Paul Richards) is waiting for him. Tony intends to dispose of him, but Willie gets the jump on Tony and turns the tables. Willie forces Tony to confess that he killed Steve's wife under Bruno's instructions, and that the woman in the club was not Mrs. Caspery, but a woman that Bruno hired to impersonate her. Her job was to implicate Steve Caspery in the impending death of his own wife. Now that that is done, Max wants Willie killed to prevent him from learning the truth about Mrs. Caspery, and toeliminate his gambling debts.
Willie goes to the woman's apartment and is confronted by Max, whom Willie kills in a shootout. Willie turns the woman in to the police.
