Great performance by Davis.

"Frontier Circus: Coals of Fire" (1962, USA). Director: William Witney.

Starring: Richard Jaeckel, Sammie Davis, Jr. and John Derek.

My search for the appearances of the Bates House on the small screen has led me to watch episodes of old American TV series, like "Wagon Trail" and "Frontier Circus", which were never shown on Norwegian TV.

This is the first time I have seen Sammie Davis, Jr. as a dramatic actor. He gives a touching portrayal of Cato Richards, a former slave. The interplay between Davis and Jaeckell is magnificent.

Former slave with an agenda

Seeing Sammy Davis, Jr. perform a couple of numbers is enough reason to watch this Frontier Circus episode. But he does turn in a good dramatic performance as a former slave with an agenda.

Richard Jaeckel spots him stealing food, but rather than turn him out John Derek hires him on as a roustabout. Davis does his share an entertains as well. But the circus is a means to an end, he's trying to get somewhere to a kill a man..

During the Civil War Davis actually was a Confederate. For that surprising turn of events you watch the episode for. His actions do make some kind of sense.

Good guest star turn by Sammy Davis, Jr.
