THE GALLANT MEN –Signals for an end Run - 1962
"The Gallant Men" was an American television series that debuted on ABC in the fall of 1962. It followed a company of US soldiers from the Sept 1943 invasion at Salerno, and their battles up the toe of Italy. The series ran for a total of 26 episodes during 1962-63. Leading the cast is Robert McQueeney, who also narrates the story. McQueeney is a newspaper reporter who follows the company on their exploits. (Sort of an Ernie Pyle clone) The rest of the regulars are played by, William Reynolds, Robert Ridgely, Francis X Slattery, Eddie Fontaine, Roland La Starza, Roger Davis and Robert Gothie. There are the standard types sprinkled throughout, the joker, the card sharp, the loner etc. This is the 10th episode.
A squad of American infantry is taking a large radio set out into the mountains south of Monte Cassino. They are to pass the radio on to a group of Italian partisans. The squad, along with a dozen partisans is ambushed by a German patrol. Seven US soldiers, including the commanding Lt, John Karlen, are killed along with most of the partisans.
Three Americans manage to escape into the hills and continue on to the meeting place. The three, Francis X Slattery, Roger Davis and newspaperman Robert McQueeney receive a cold welcome from the leader of the partisan band. The man, Eduardo Ciannelli does not particularly like Americans, as they had killed his son earlier in the war. But they now have a common enemy, the Germans.
The radio the men had been humping over the mountains is found to be damaged. Radioman Davis thinks he might be able to repair the damage using parts from several other damaged radios.
Also in the mix at the partisan camp, is, pretty Mala Powers and partisan, Rodolfo Acosta. Powers and Sgt Slattery take an instant liking to one another. They spent the night together doing a bit of "sentry duty'. This annoys Acosta no end as he also has the hots for the ravishing Miss Powers. The next morning he pulls a blade and goes after Slattery. Slattery disarms the man and gives him a sound thrashing. Acosta gives, and slinks away muttering he will get even.
Meanwhile, radioman, Davis, has repaired the radio and contacted his company commander, William Reynolds. Reynolds tells the three men to hold tight. Reynolds is sending some help to bring them back.
Now of course the Germans put in another appearance. They are led to the hideout by the jealous Acosta. There is a brisk firefight with the partisans taking the brunt of the exchange. That is till Reynolds and the reinforcements show. They flank the Germans and dispose of them in a hail of bullets. Acosta surrenders but is shot down by Miss Powers.
