When Margot is talking about the next general election (which was in 1979), Jerry says that their guy has a twenty thousand majority. In fact, in the election of October, 1974, the Conservative candidate for Surbiton, Nigel Fisher (1913 - 1996) gained 15330 votes, and his majority was only just over six thousand - assuming this is the electorate the Leadbetters and Goods live in, given Surbiton is no longer a UK electorate. If one assumes their local seat is in fact Kingston upon Thames, in the October 1974 UK General Election, the winner was Conservative Norman Lamont (Lord Lamont of Lerwick, 1942 - ), with 20,680 votes, and a majority of under ten thousand. Either way, these were reasonably safe Tory seats with between 35,000 to 42,000 voters each.
