As the first series of 'Goodnight Sweetheart' draws to a close Gary is contemplating stopping going back to the 1940s; first he gets barred from the Royal Oak for making certain comments about the king that Phoebe's father find less than patriotic then he returns home to Yvonne to find that he is in the doghouse after running up credit card bills paying for his wartime hobby. Friend Ron has an idea how to make some money; invest in a firm that was almost worthless in 1940 but is booming in 1943. Gary also has an idea how to get back into Phoebe and Eric's good books when he learns details of a visit by the king to an East End hospital
he even manages to get them to meet the King. After that success he invites Phoebe to the Savoy for a farewell meal; he hope to spend the night with her but news of her husband's capture puts an end to that and leaves him unsure if he will see her again.
This episode was a fine conclusion to the first series; it wraps up much of the story in such a way that anybody who didn't know that there were five more series to come could see it as an ending. There are plenty of laughs to be had on the way to the poignant ending that makes it look as though Gary and Phoebe may never get together. The way Gary engineers a meeting with the king is amusing as is Phoebe's reaction when she is introduced to him. Not all plot lines are wrapped up; there is no suggestion how Ron's plan to make a killing on the stock market will work out one can only guess that it won't go quite according to plan. Overall this was a fine conclusion to the first series that left me looking forward to finding out what happens next somehow I feel the 1940s haven't seen the last of Gary Sparrow.
