A crippled man has been planning revenge for years. He gets his chance
kfo94944 April 2013
Season 14 starts out with a bang as we get a story about how life can be sad plus also ironic. And anytime an episode has the lovely Charlotte (Considine) Stewart playing a part, you usually know that the offering will be pleasant to the eye.

The main character in this episode is a former lawman and friend of Marshal Dillon, Grant Lyle (Morgan Woodward). Years ago he was intentional disabled when an outlaw named Hoxy took a hammer to his hands making both useless. Today he wears black gloves over the hands which are more of a claw than working part of his body. Grant's son, Jeffrey Lyle (Robert Pine), is a sheriff in a nearby town that is known for his quick draw.

The two Lyle men come riding into Dodge City because the outlaw Hoxy is being released from prison and is due in Dodge in a few days on the stage. Grant wants his son to avenge the injury to his hands by getting into a gunfight with the bandit and kill him. Grant has been planning this moment for a very long time. he has made his son as good and quick as any in the state and now he feels like his revenge will be forthcoming.

The young Lyle does not have the taste of blood that his father has and the thought of killing a man makes him sick. When he comes across an old girlfriend, Iris, that decide to marry. Leaving his crippled father to take the revenge on his own.

Grant gets Newly to modify a gun for him that will fire when the handle is pulled back. the gun is very inaccurate. But with the stage due to arrive, Grant long plan is ready for his revenge but all his planning may be for naught.

Morgan Woodward is excellent as the crippled man that appears his only duty in life is to take revenge. The story was good, the acting was nice and the tension was high. A good watch.

Note- In this episode they show Ma Smalley's boarding house right next to the Dodge House (Hotel). It has always been located outside the main area right before going out of town in a two story house.

A Very Powerful Episode With an Unforgettable Morgan Woodward Performance.
jlthornb511 January 2019
While this episode is well written and directed, the performances of Robert Pine and Morgan Woodward make it something very, very special. Pine has never been better and truly shines in his role. However, Morgan Woodward gives what is nothing less than the performance of a lifetime. One can feel his obsessive hatred, his soul burning passionate lust for revenge, and his overwhelming rage. The depth of emotion he shows seems to come from his very being and the ultimately explosive fracture of his psyche is unlike anything the actor has ever had the opportunity to show. His range is amazing and Woodward creates a character who is real to us and from whom we cannot look away. This is a performance for the ages and some of the finest acting in the history of episodic television. You will never forget Morgan Woodward's incredibly breathtaking work in this tremendous Gunsmoke.

A New Opening and a Tale of Consuming Hatred
wdavidreynolds6 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Season 14 debuts with a new opening and a revenge story. The iconic shootout that opened the first thirteen seasons of the series has been replaced with a brief scene of Matt Dillon frantically riding his horse. (The scene first appeared in the Season 12 finale, "Nitro! Part 2.") This is indicative of the time, because violence on television was in significant decline.

Grant Lyle is a former lawman and an old friend of Matt Dillon. His law enforcement career was cut short when an outlaw named Hoxy smashed his hands using a hammer and anvil, permanently damaging them. Hoxy was subsequently arrested and sentenced to prison.

In the ensuing years, Lyle taught his son Jeffrey to master the quick draw. Jeffrey is now a grown man, and he is amazingly fast on the draw. The father and son travel to Dodge City because Hoxy is scheduled to be released from prison and will arrive in the town soon. The father is planning for his son to kill Hoxy in a gunfight as an act of revenge.

Grant and Jeffrey encounter some unexpected circumstances in Dodge City. Matt Dillon suspects the pair's intentions. The Marshal is aware that Jeffrey had been involved in some law enforcement duties elsewhere. With Festus Haggen out of town, Marshal Dillon asks the son to be his temporary deputy, which will give Matt an opportunity to keep Jeffrey close.

When Jeffrey is forced to shoot and kill a man in a fair fight, the young man realizes he has no appetite for killing. Even though he was defending himself, he is sickened at the fact he killed another person.

The Lyles had met a woman named Iris on their way to Dodge. Iris knew Jeffrey when they were younger. Shortly after arriving in Dodge, the father and son learn Iris has also arrived in the town. Iris and Jeffrey begin a relationship and soon marry. These developments do not fit well within Grant's plans that were years in the making.

Grant is so intent on killing Hoxy, he approaches Newly O'Brien and demands he convert a pistol into a "fanning pistol" that can be fired by quickly pulling and releasing, or "fanning" the hammer. If Jeffrey refuses to complete his father's plans, Grant will try.

This story is primarily about Grant Lyle being completely consumed and blinded by his desire for revenge. Such intense hatred will destroy a person if it is allowed to. The suspense builds as we wait for Hoxy's arrival and the inevitable showdown.

Morgan Woodward plays the part of Grant Lyle. Gunsmoke fans are going to quickly recognize Woodward as a frequent guest on the show. He had previously appeared in Season 13's "Death Train." He eventually had parts in a total of 19 different episodes of the series.

Robert Pine makes his first Gunsmoke appearance as Jeffrey Lyle. He would eventually appear in four different episodes. Pine has been in everything from Wagon Train to The Office and is still working as of this review. Of course, long-time television fans will remember him as Sgt. Joseph Getraer on the television series CHiPs.

Sam Melville and Ken Mayer both frequented Gunsmoke in guest roles. In this story, they are Jack Garvin and Tuttle, respectively. Garvin and Tuttle had first encountered the Lyles in the opening scene before everyone arrived in Dodge. Garvin thinks he has a score to settle with the younger Lyle.

Joe De Santis plays Hoxy. De Santis had appeared in three previous series episodes. Late in Season 13, he played Sherriff Mark Handlin, who was murdered early in the story titled "The Jackals." This is his last Gunsmoke role.

One of the best things about this installment of Gunsmoke is the presence of Charlotte Stewart (credited as Charlotte Considine in this episode). Stewart played the schoolteacher for several years on Little House on the Prairie. Cult film and television fans know her for several roles in various projects by filmmaker David Lynch, including appearances in Twin Peaks and the role of Mary X in the film Eraserhead.

The acting propels this story, which is common in the history of Gunsmoke. Everyone is at the top of their game. However, I found most of the circumstances that develop in the story too easy to predict. The opening scene sets up plot developments that are obvious. There is a surprise at the end, but given the buildup, it is not too difficult to guess, either.
