Buffalo soldiers that had 10 year before been held as prisoners recognized the man who had been in charge. Over 700 prisoners died. Just before the prison was liberated by Shermann they had branded the prison commandor with a cross above his heart. Now a respectable man named Driscoll he is found out to be the notorious Carl Martin Craig, the Devil of Donneville , the commandant of a prisoner of war camp. Craig claimed to have taken no lives by his action , but by inaction. The prisoner died of lack of food , shelter and medical attention. He wrote letters to his superiors that were ignored about the conditions in the prison. He felt he had been silent when he could have spoken out about the conditions, he felt in that way responsible for the deaths of hundreds. Although, there was talk of a hangin , Taft (secretary of the interior) sent a pardon for all acts of war between 1864 and 1865.
