Mutually Assured Survival?
cougarannie15 January 2016
Many will never forget when the Earth was threatened with a "Global Warming" that could have seen its temperature spike at over a million degrees. And precisely what to do about the threat was the subject of intense debate.

This episode captures the spirit of that era.

Paladin attempts to aid an attractive young lady named Melissa, only to have her lecture him on the need for "Unilateral Disarmament" - meaning she wants him to hand over his gun. No dice. But Melissa (a newly-minted missionary) and Paladin are both headed for the rowdy town of Bugbear, whose name the Free Dictionary defines as "A difficult or persistent problem".

The Town Council of Bugbear wants to change its name to Elysium, after that mythical kingdom of happiness and peace. Melissa is determined to help bring about the transformation.

At a town hall meeting Paladin points out that the local "hooligans" who wear guns do so in self defense, fearing what might happen if they themselves went about unarmed. The citizens who want the said hooligans' weapons confiscated are not entirely comfortable with the notion if giving up their own, and certainly not with the thought of being the first to do so.

Paladin, hired to make the town "gun-free", has some initial success thanks to his Colt 45. Then Melissa arrives, horrified to find Paladin still plying his trade. She makes an impassioned speech extolling the joy of living in mutual harmony and brotherly love. She actually collects the rest of the guns from the townsmen, though Paladin's presence in the background may have had something to do with that!

But "Peace" is short-lived as a vengeful trio arrives to take retribution for the death of a kinsman. Melissa finds her faith and her principles tested as never before.

Does "BugBear" truly become, and remain, "Elysium"? Only Time must tell, since the writers most certainly won't!
