The derringer gets a workout and no help from the Colt
ebertip11 June 2019
Paladin is in bad shape at the beginning: drugged, Coltless, horseless and moneyless. A young woman helps him, finds his business card and remarks I like the sound of that. Paladin locates the bad guys, who are family, and is threatened by the one who took his Colt. Paladin mentions Bull Run to give the woman a hint to save him from the bad guys. Then it's escape to Wittenburg, but on the road a lot of things get reversed, as a knight moves on the chess board. Both derringer bullets are used to great effect. Not so with the multishot rifle.

I don't think Paladin's going for it
ynot-1631 August 2011
Paladin wakes up beaten, and stripped of his horse, gun and $1000. Susan, the lower-class but surprisingly well-educated lady who finds him, finds something the robbers missed: his business card. She tells Paladin his assailant was Sol Goodfellow, and that he was beaten and robbed after being drugged. She hopes Paladin will kill Sol. She has felt his boot before too. Paladin, of course, will not leave town without his property. Paladin learns that Sol's brother the sheriff, and his other brothers, want him to leave town empty-handed,now. Not likely. Paladin faces two dangers, the villainy and teamwork of the Goodfellows, and the lady's romantic interest in Paladin.

On the Run
dougdoepke12 September 2013
Camera zooms in on a prostrate Paladin on the floor, disheveled and dazed—not exactly the usual series opening. Seems our roving knight was drugged and robbed. Now with help of blonde girl Susan, he hopes to get his money and dignity back. But robber is part of a family that runs the town. Paladin shoots one of them and he and Susan are chased out of town with the gang close behind. Things get complicated when Susan makes a play for the rugged hero.

Pretty good entry, especially the first part. The shootout is none too convincing, especially the conflab between Susan and rich man Keystone in the midst of flying bullets, but the twist with her is a good one. Entry is also notable for explaining why Paladin wears a chess knight on his holster and is pretty clever.
