I love this episode
junk1958-830-20888817 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I have to agree with the previous poster - this is one of my favorite episodes. Really loved the Monopoly cards; the last one, from McGarrett was the best. Also loved the last scene for the fact that the culprit heard the helicopter which added to his sense of urgency, but that was not how he was actually caught. All to be expected given the lead in to the conclusion, but still done really well.

The music in this episode also added a certain ambiance not found in most other episodes. Rather than being edgy and hardcore (which is normally an important part of Hawaii 5-0, and not to be dismissed lightly), this episode was all about "cool". Which is another way this episode was set apart from the others. Not that I would want all H50 episodes to be like it, just that the contrast was great and the acting was first rate.

maybe the best TV episode of all time
bobbynear30 July 2013
not only the best five o episode hands down, but possibly one of the best TV episodes ever. Funny and imaginative at the same time. I could literally watch this everyday and never tire of it. Perfect writing, perfect acting and a whimsical background score that adds as much to this episode as the classic music from Psycho added to that film. Hume Cronyn is perfect in this role. For a TV series as grim and dark as Five o to do an amusing story like this is amazing. If only anything anywhere on TV today could or would do a story even close to this I would never be able to take my eyes off the screen. As far as a rating..that is off the charts...10 or 100 ... even that is not enough

Probably the best episode of the series...or at least among the very best.
planktonrules22 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
It's really hard to say that any one episode of "Hawaii Five-O" is the best--there are many very good ones and many are good in different ways. But for me, this is probably the best...or at least my favorite.

Hume Cronyn plays "Lewis Avery Filer"--an ultra-cool and brilliant thief that appears in another episode two years later ("Odd Man In")--probably because his character was so popular and exciting. Unlike the usual thief, this one just loves messing with the police--like the mind game is more important that the money. In addition, his character is very polite, clever and filled with a glee at outfoxing the police. In particular, he loves to leave Monopoly cards at the robbery sites and even shows up at a press conference McGarrett has called to talk to the press about this high-profile case! What a guy! Eventually, however, you know he'll get tripped up--after all, McGarrett is the star of the show--not Cronyn. Plus, the series never would let evil win in the end! Overall, one of the best written and most interesting shows they ever did. In addition, it's so good, you may find, like me, you don't mind seeing this one again and again. Great acting by Cronyn as well--who, for my money, is a much better nemesis for McGarrett than Wo Fat!

Larceny has never been such fun!
garrard13 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Screen and stage veteran Hume Cronyn has a field day as a middle-aged robber with a flair for the grandiose as he dons several costumes to perpetrate his crimes. A combination master criminal and kind grandfather, Cronyn is superb as he matches wits with and occasionally outwit McGarrett (Lord) and his crack team of detectives. His ultimate undoing is cleverly executed, even though the viewer wishes that he could get away.

Morton Steven added another in his memorable scores to this whimsical entry in the long-running show's history.

Stories and performances as are exhibited by this installment support why "Hawaii 5-0" was one of the longest dramatic shows in television history.

Witty change of pace for the series
puddytat57549 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Au contraire! OVER FIFTY? STEAL is an exemplary episode of the classic Five-0. At least once a season, the program lightened the mood with an episode devised to provide fun. In this case, the great Hume Cronyn came on board to portray a man who had been ousted from his job because of his age and decided to fight back. And he did so in the nicest way, providing coffee and playing cards to the folks who happened to be there when he pulled his jobs. Using disguises and a jolly, try to catch me attitude, Cronyn's character is a joy to behold. And the cast rises to the occasion, enjoying the heck out of doing a light, caper- oriented episode for a change. Five-0 was always the kind of police procedural which could take these side roads and still provide first- class entertainment. Not every episode has to be about homicide. Sometimes it's good to just be clever fun.

One of the best

Such a great series and this is a perfect episode. Every show is so serious, and that's a good thing, but this one has a lighter side and it's refreshing every once in a blue moon. Plus, I love those cars!!!!

DO YOU REMEMBER THIS ONE?
tcchelsey7 April 2023
I was a kid when this outrageous dark comedy episode came out, but it was so true to life as there were always stories of senior citizens stealing stuff. The grim stories at the time (even in Hawaii) may have inspired the writers here. Also this is a tribute to the great stage, film and tv actor Hume Cronyn, who with his equally talented wife, Jessica Tandy (DRIVING MISS DAISY) made an incredible team in their day. He was also a favorite of Alfred Hitchcock. Cronyn goes solo here, truly a thorn in McGarrett's side, as he plays a forced into retirement insurance agent who uses every trick in the book to steal --to survive. Cronyn's use of disguises (fake moustache, etc) are hands down hilarious, and so is his arrogant, eccentric personality. His performance is truly one for the books, of course frustrating the heck out of cool Steve McGarrett. Check out the witty dialogue between the two, if not the wise cracks? This episode was so well received that Cronyn returned with the same quirky character a season or two later. I agree with he last reviewer, and even 50 years later!!!, this is perhaps the best episode of the entire lengthy series, beautifully combining comedy with drama. Creative writing 101. A must see.

Light, odd, humorous, and stimulating episode
knudsenh27 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is what I will classify as an out of the box situation that a unit like 5-0 would have to deal with, which I found very interesting. Mostly because of the type of criminal that Mr. Filer (played by Cronyn) seems to be. An older man who was abused and disrespected most of his life, now wants to get his payout from the businesses in the world that he came to detest. Filer is no a violent man, and in his case, he wants to flaunt what he has planned, in order to embarrass law enforcement in the course of gathering his loot. In fact, Filer is so intent on embarrassment, he does it in as much a comical way that he can. Great episode, great story, script, and character in Mr. Filer. Equally refreshing is how the 5-0 team manage to laugh at some of his antics along the way as they try to finally get ahead of him, and end his string of near ridiculous heists. I rate this a 10 or being light, odd, and keeping me anxious for the next stunt by Filer.

A nice change of pace...
pfr168526 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Shows from a dramatic series that are done for laughs are always a nice change of pace. This one is no exception. Hume Cronyn was great as Filer; in a role in which it would have been far too easy to go over-the-top, he gave just enough of a comical bent to his character without overdoing it. Even Jack Lord was able to deliver some dry humour quite well, especially his line right at the end - "If you finish your packing, we'll go."

The best episode of the series
EmsFather1 August 2023
I've seen this episode several times and it never gets stale. It is a wonderful change of pace for the show. Hume Cronyn plays his character perfectly. You actually root for him to succeed and for him to outsmart McGarrett. The soundtrack adds to the episode as well. It makes you wish the episode lasted 90 minutes or longer. Commercials ruin the continuity of the show. The makeup and disguises Cronyn wears is what adds to the humor in the show. It was good to see a crime show with no violence or shooting. Definitely an episode worth watching and one worthy of several sequels, not just the one. A must to watch!

Would rate higher if it ended differently
johnbmoore-1711 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Hume Cronyn is great here. One of the show's best episodes, but could have been much better if they had worked with Filer's backstory. But no, had to have McGarret's standard smartest-guy-in-the-room ending. Love the show, hate the character.

Cute, Cronyn gets to play around HOWEVER
Oak Owl3 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As other reviewers have stated, this is a non-typical episode, which has a degree of charm and lighthearted fun. The music is a tip-off; a bit Pink Panther. Hugh Cronyn gets an opportunity to depict a playful character that you find yourself rooting for. However, there a number of Plot Convenience Playhouse aspects: a rental car that is immaculate, even down to the air filter?? Cough. Cough. AND, if the thief had a lawyer worth his salt, he'd walk: McGarrett effected Assault, and Illegal Search and Seizure on the suspect (the shoe/soil); it would not be accepted in court - all the rest was circumstantial evidence.

Don't mistake novelty for quality
rockmail15 May 2014
I'm torn, this episode is a nice breakaway from the formulaic criminal pursuit on Hawaii Five O, but the reason it has appeal to the regular viewer is just contrast and emotional stimulation, not quality.

So as an actual episode, it's 0 out of 10 for reasons listed below, but for wacky breaking through the wall of tradition, I'll give it 5 of 10.

It leaves any story behind, just to let Hume Cronyn have an episode to perform. So that's actually a good thing most of the time, but Hume blasts through the characters, makeup, and costumes here like its a vaudeville show. An his acting is painfully over the top and obvious. It's pretty much a comic book episode, which of course is why it's appealing from an energy standpoint, but that doesn't make it great.

And speaking of vaudeville show, the Morton Stevens score is not a thing of brilliance, he simply wrote up or found a few minutes of 20s ragtime, and he loops it through the wacky parts. Again, it's a contrast to the usual corporate stock music, so it rises in interest due to novelty not quality.

Lastly, although the story is not really important to the episode, it unfortunately totally discards any sense of reality, as the criminal bases his enterprise in a location that includes a massive amount of physical evidence to be caught with, rather than using a generic location - say an ordinary home. This simplifies McGarrett's job to a quick trip to the forensics lab and a casual drive. (Trying to avoid spoilers here) In summary, this episode is the typical "comedy escape" episode that producer/writers throw in when they or the cast are tired of doing the same thing over and over, or the ratings are slipping.

Not sophisticated, not complex, not deep, not unique, not that interesting. I came here to seek out any mention of Cronyn's overacting and found only goofy praise. Oh well.

Clever Costumes, Sinister Smirks
at-050379 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Other reviewers have provided great descriptions of this creative episode. So I'll just point out a favorite scene...

Disguised as a police officer, thief Filer is twice given an order by an unknowing Danny Williams to instruct a driver to move an illegally parked vehicle. Williams then watches with suspicion as this 'police officer' casually disobeys, walks to his own car, starts it, and drives off, snubbing Dano with a little finger wave as he passes by. And it's Dano's reaction that he'd been duped (with a "How do I explain this to Steve?" facial expression) that resulted in a futile car chase, and made a lightly-comical scene quite memorable.

A most-welcome, non-violent storyline, with a twist of levity. Well done.

Monopoly Man
gregerrrrr20 August 2022
Glad I finally found this episode on the H&I channel. This was one of the most clever and enjoyable chapters in this great series. I remember it well and it was just as good as I recall from over 5-0 years ago ;-) Hume Cronyn was the perfect foil for McGarrett, Dano and the rest of the very serious police cast. The light music used only added to the tongue in cheek mood throughout. Hope others take the time to see this one.

Silly, Goofy, Vastly Overrated
bellevuewa26 April 2015
Reviewers should have to be pre-qualified, somehow.

This one is a droll, bland attempt to either provide a vehicle for Hume, or a change of pace for the Series.

I am appreciative of the one reviewer, though, he is correct.

The music is inappropriate for Hawaii Five O; acting is goofy and contrived; and the regulars appear to be not enjoying filming this episode.

Unappealing, disjointed script.

Skip, except for true fans of series.

Skip This One
samwa-2731115 October 2019
It's amazing. On all websites, people rave about Hume Cronyn, and both of the episodes with him, on Five O.

Here, there are no accomplices, few other characters, except Che, an absolutely lame and unappealing set of music cues, and such a brazen type of moxie, from Hume.

No offense to anyone, but Hume seems very effeminate in both episodes, just difficult to watch.

It's hard to say why this was made, unless it was to please Hume, because this one is really not good.

Lord and others, just go through the motions.
