On Craig's sixteenth birthday, Lucy accompanies him to the DMV and tags along for the road test.
This is another of those episodes where Lucy makes a pest of herself and it doesn't make her character very sympathetic. She acts very self-righteous and defiant, tearing her driver's license into pieces in front of a policeman.
Jack Gilford is the MVP player here as the driving instructor who takes no guff from Lucy. He's the funniest thing about this one. I didn't care for him in MAMA'S FAMILY or THE GOLDEN GIRLS but here he's brilliant.
The script mentions Lucy having moved to Los Angeles from New York just three years prior. I wonder if this was a nod to her previous Lucy Carmichael character?.
"Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle", the book Harry gives Craig for his birthday, was a young adult novel originally published in 1911.
When Craig tries on the turtleneck sweater Kim knitted, he looks like a pineapple!
Worth watching for Jack Gilford's performance, not Lucy's.
