Very Odd Performance by the Actress Playing the Secretary
kgraovac4 October 2023
"The Flip Wilson Show" was a runaway hit on rival network NBC and was even higher-rated than "Here's Lucy" at the time this episode was filmed and aired. I've read that Lucy was always interested in whomever was considered "hot" at the time, so I guess she figured snagging Wilson was a huge coup.

Unfortunately, this is just another of those standard 'Lucy-stalks-a-celebrity' plots and both she and Wilson come across very hammy here -- in the episode itself as well as the show-within-a-show where the regulars and Wilson spoof "Gone With the Wind". Lucy doing the southern belle schtick worked much better back in 1965 where she played Lucy-Belle in the "Lucy and Arthur Godfrey" episode of "The Lucy Show".

I must mention Kim Hamilton playing Jane the Office Manager. She is so stoic and serious here, her whole demeanor seems as though she should be acting in a totally different show, like an episode of "Mannix" or "Cannon". A very jarring performance.

"What I'm Gonna Do With All This House?"

This is one of the funniest and certainly most famous episodes of the HERE'S LUCY series with a classic GONE WITH THE WIND skit.

When a call comes into the employment agency seeking temporary help for Flip Wilson, starstruck Lucy goes and fills the job herself. Unfortunately she discovers the job is merely handling his fan mail but she does sneak into his office and meet the star to get his autograph but gets fired for it. Meanwhile, Harry has joined a little theater - a VERY little theater in which he as the only male member is cast as Rhett Butler in a stage adaption of GONE WITH THE WIND. When three other cast members quit he is forced to accept Lucy and Kim for the roles of Scarlett and Melanie but the role of Prissy still needs to be cast...

The GWTW skit, while not as famous as Carol Burnett's later burlesque, is quite hilarious and Wilson's Prissy is priceless, here very re-visioned into a liberated sister. Lucie Arnaz gives the best performance she ever gave on the series as the due-any-minute Melanie and almost steals the skit away from Flip. Lucy's Scarlett is almost a straight man to Prissy and Melanie but she's lots of fun too.
