- Amanda finds Nick, still crestfallen over the death of his partner, drunk in a bar. She attempts to apologize for what happened, but Nick tells her to leave. Outside the bar, they witness a shooting, but they are too late to save the victim. After fighting off the killers, Amanda sees them enter a car that also contains Mario Cardoza, an immortal hit man. Realizing that it was not a simple mugging, she and Nick try to uncover the truth and stop Cardoza before he can reach his next target.—page8701
- Amanda fights an immortal named Cardoza because he put a hit out on an old Native American man. Amanda tells Wolf all about being immortal and Wolf also witnesses a quickinening.
Amanda and Nick try to save an old American Indian man from a savage mugging only for Amanda to realize there is an Immortal involved. Mario Cardoza is a centuries-old assassin currently living as a highbrow chef who murdered the discharged "code speaker" (one of the Navajo-speaking Native Americans who participated in WW2) because the old man recognized him from 50 years ago. Nick enlists the old man's grandson in helping to track down Mario - leading to similar suspicious old photos of Amanda - while Amanda tries to convince him not to go after Cardoza. She ends up shooting herself in front of him and tells him the secret of the Immortals' existence in a final attempt to get Nick to leave him alone. She is forced to confront Mario at sword's length and Nick becomes witness to his first Quickening.
