- A watcher uses Amanda and Wolfe to try to steal items from an immortal. It turns out that the immortal killed the watcher's father, and that Amanda and Wolfe didn't even know he was a watcher. Amanda does kill the immortal but for reasons of her own
A man (Tim Helfert) asks Nick for protection saying someone is trying to kill him - a claim borne out by him getting shot at even as he asks for aid. Nick is forced to kill the attacker only to find he is a Watcher. When he and Amanda confront Tim, she is able to identify him as a Watcher himself, on the run from the organization he was part of due to interference with Immortal lives - specifically Amanda's. Helfert had stolen her Chronicles from the Watcher's library specifically so that she could be induced to kill the Immortal Vladimir Rankov, whom she has cause to hate. Helfert's reasons were just - Rankov had killed his father, another Watcher - but he chose not to ask directly or honestly. As much as Nick and Amanda have cause to hate his manipulations, Amanda is willing to go after Vladimir in fulfillment of their shared past.
