Going to the Dogs
Hitchcoc20 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There are two plot elements. One has to do with Alice (what does she think she's doing?) bringing home a puppy from the pound, not even discussing it with Ralph. The second is Norton discovering a bowl of dog food in the ice box (a real ice box) and thinking it is some kind of pâté. He and Ralph start spreading it on crackers and the big guy decides it's Alice's recipe and he is going to franchise it. It leads to an uncomfortable scene with his boss. When Ralph finds out about the dog he goes ballistic, but there are some cute things at the end. There is one thing I wonder about with this series. In one episode, they get a phone and keep it and yet in the next they're still hollering out the window. In this, Ralph takes three dogs home. Are those dogs going to appear in the next episode? We'll see.

Love Me, Love My Puppy

Typical Honeymooner laughs until the last few minutes that do turn poignant. Seems Alice has adopted an adorable puppy from the pound. She's hoping Ralph will relent on pets in their small apartment once he sees the lovable little face. Trouble is sneaky food sampler Norton mistakes the dog food for a delicious appetizer. And once Ralph tastes it, he gets typical big ideas like getting his boss to financially back a sales campaign once he too tastes the food. Naturally, laughs abound when the big-shot bus executives stand around tasting what's really dog food.

Except for the note of unexpected poignancy, it's a typical Honeymooner laugh fest with Ralph strutting his big plans and Norton meekly going along. Of course, actors Gleason and Carney, as usual, really exaggerate their respective characters for comedic effect. But then, so much of comedy, I think, is premised on exaggeration.
