Real Danger
Hitchcoc22 September 2017
This is a far cry from the rest of the series. Ralph witnesses a robbery and the two guys see him. He goes into immediate panic, hiding out, jumping when any loud noise presents itself. Alice tries to get him to tell the police, but he believes such an act will put them in danger. It turns out that the guys find out where he lives and show up. The remainder is comedic but with a very harsh edge to it. Alice is under threat, used against Ralph to control him. This is certainly a unique episode in a mostly lightweight series.

Always funny when Ralph is afraid and nervous

Quick paced funny episode. Cleverly setup Tommy's toy gun, and banging faucet were funny props to add to Ralphs fright. Always good to see Ken Lynch (cop) who was fantastic on "The Andy Griffith Show". Wonderful over acting by Audrey Meadows (Alice).

RALPH AND THE BIG BANK ROBBERY!
tcchelsey7 April 2024
Leonard Stern was great at writing this kind of fluff, also one of Jackie Gleason's main writers. Without too much surprise, he began writing for ABBOTT AND COSTELLO and the BOWERY BOYS!

This is has an Abbott and Costello feel, especially when bank robbers shoot Ralph's hat off his head --something that usually happened to Lou Costello.

Actually, this is a re-working of a previous episode where Ralph finds a suitcase filled with money that happens to belong to robbers. In this case, the robbers want to plug 'em because he's a witness!

True, this episode is a bit more serious than others; both Ralph and Alice are scared out of their wits. BUT... you know something is going to happen to the goons, right? Series regular Frank Marth (who just had that look) is great as one of the bad guys called Barney, and Ken Lynch plays a cop, a role he did for decades.

A classic. From SEASON 1 EPISODE 29, remastered dvd box set. 5 dvds. 2020 release.

Scary Episode

Warning: Spoilers
This episode full of wisdom about getting involved and an facing down crime is still disturbing. Ralph is an unmitigated hero pulverizing one punk who is too dumb know how ready a bus driver is. But one thing has always haunted me and it is the 5 minutes I want with the sneering partner. Norton should have been allowed to deck him. I imagine this thing got some response via phone and mail. Be interesting to see of it got many peoples back up in anger the way Edith Bunkers rape did many years later. In short this thing made me angry and its final catharsis was to short to completely satisfy but is is well done nonetheless. This was TV ahead of its time in that dramedy was not typical in the late 50s

Lesser Episode

An edgier episode than usual. The half-hour's got its funny moments, but the gun waving and dire threats are a departure, even though in a comedic context. Seems Ralph witnessed a bank robbery and now the culprits are after him. His blustery moments interspersed with the robbers in his apartment manage, but not that well.

In my book, the highpoint comes with the pool game that opens the entry. Naturally, Norton turns it into a laugher with his preparation antics. Then too, anyone who's seen The Hustler (1963) knows how good Gleason is with a pool cue. Also, I'd never made the connection before, but the Ralph-Norton antics resemble those of Laurel and Hardy, to say nothing about the combination of the fat guy typically bonking the ditzy skinny one. Anyway, to me, it's not one of their better episodes.
