Emilio Fernandez and Benson Fong

A small Mexican village is cursed by the vengeful brujo Carlos (Emilio Fernandez), whose wife had been murdered by Don Emilio Fierro (Henry Darrow), forced to kill her in self defense. When Caine arrives with a small boy believed to be a force for good against evil, the lad is immediately struck down by a mysterious ailment. Father Salazar (Julio Medina) presides over an empty church, because the superstitious locals believe more in the power of the Devil than the salvation of God. Caine remembers how a small boy in the Shaolin temple had died, thinking he was the victim of a curse brought on by Sorcerer Liu (Benson Fong). Master Po (Keye Luke) explains how a tree absorbs everything it touches, "even the poison that would kill it," teaching young student Caine to be like a mirror, which cannot be harmed by the flame of the candle, merely reflecting it back to its source. Faced with the realization that his evil powers have no effect upon Caine's soul, the brujo's hold on the village is broken. At one point, Father Salazar asks Caine what he worships, and the expected response is "life." Benson Fong would return for one more episode, "The Vanishing Image."
