Larry Sanders get off to a cracking start
Woodyanders7 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Neurotic and egocentric late night talk show host Larry Sanders (Garry Shandling, who's pure smug angsty perfection) gets pressured by hard-driving network executive Melanie Parrish (sharply played by Deborah May) to do live commercials for a gardening tool called the Garden Weasel on his show.

Thanks to a caustic script by Peter Tolan and Shandling's first-hand knowledge of the whole talk show scene, this excellent pilot astutely nails the brutal backbiting behind the scenes machinations that happen on a regular basis on Larry's show as well as gives us a strong sense of Larry as an insecure, yet arrogant jerk who's used to getting his way. Rip Torn as Larry's crusty bulldog producer Arthur and Jeffrey Tambor as obsequious sidekick Hank Kingsley positively shine in their vividly drawn roles. Robert Hays pokes good-natured fun of himself, plus Hank gets a marvelous wingman moment in which he does a spot-on pitch for the Garden Weasel. Arthur telling Parrish right to her face that she reminds him of a boy he killed in Korea is absolute hilariously nasty comedy gold. A total hoot.

"Well, hello there, Mr. Hoffa!"

'What Have You Done for Me Lately?' is the brilliantly funny pilot for a series that successfully satirized the talk show genre for six seasons. The always great Garry Shandling plays the title character, who is pressured by a new boss into doing a series of live commercials to help the show pay for itself. Larry, of course, is uncomfortable with this idea, and that discomfort shows through in the spots, where he mostly wisecracks his way through them.

An excellent supporting cast is well showcased here, especially Jeffrey Tambor as the sidekick Hank Kingsley, who has plenty of commercial experience under his belt but is not considered for this task since the powers-that-be feel he's already over-exposed. A typically hearty Rip Torn is wonderful as Artie, Larry's loyal producer. Guest stars include such typically solid performers as James Karen, as the network head, and an amusing Robert Hays (best known for the "Airplane!" spoofs) playing himself. Deborah May is perfect as Larry's nemesis.

Some absolutely priceless lines here, particularly when Larry makes fun of the 'Garden Weasel' tool. "Why did they name this after a rodent? Why not call it a rat stick?"

A promising beginning for the series that has this viewer looking forward to working his way through it.

Eight out of 10.
