Sam Waterston: Executive ADA Jack McCoy
Quotes
-
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : [looking from Vanessa, as she walks away, to Jack] Am I missing something here?
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Inevitable discovery.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : That's not what I meant.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : No, but it's how we get the gun back in.
-
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : You interested in a burger?
[focused on paperwork in her hand, Serena doesn't respond]
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Hello?
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : Just a minute. These are Zachary's canceled checks over the past year, and the beginning of each month, he wrote a check for $3,000 payable to cash.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Walking around money.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : That's a hell of a walk.
-
Vanessa Galiano : Murder two? Come on Jack. Cheating wife, murdered lover; it's as old as the Old Testament.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Is there a legal argument in there someplace?
Vanessa Galiano : Are you really that thick or are your boxers just tied in a knot because of the citizenship thing?
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : You know me better than that.
Vanessa Galiano : Can you spell "racism"? Any other defendant would have been offered man two, extreme emotional disturbance, and you would have called it a day.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : He waited a week after he found out that the baby wasn't his before he killed Arnold Zachary. I mean, go back and look at the Good Book written by the apostles up in Albany. It's called a cooling-off period, and it negates the lesser mes rea.
Vanessa Galiano : [sarcastic] Ooh, they get prettier and smarter.
-
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : I'll consider man one. He serves the maximum.
Vanessa Galiano : You'll shove it is what you'll do.
Miguel Camacho : I didn't mean to...
Vanessa Galiano : Oh, stay cool, Miguel. Once you get to know Mr. McCoy a little better, you see where he's concerned. Smoke in the bedroom doesn't always mean there's a fire in the mattress.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Vanessa...
Vanessa Galiano : Jack, we're talking about different cultures here. The Latins; you know, it's a macho thing. Humiliation in the community, it's a powerful force.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : You're not going to argue that...
Vanessa Galiano : Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm crude. I'm disgusting. And I win cases.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Could I please finish a sentence here?
Vanessa Galiano : Why? I'm not listening to you anyway.
-
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : And it appears you didn't listen to the indictment, either. Your client confessed.
Vanessa Galiano : Query: when is a confession not a confession? Answer: when it's coerced.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : He signed his Miranda warnings.
Vanessa Galiano : That's right, in English. As you well know, my client is hardly fluent.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : That's ridiculous, Vanessa!
Vanessa Galiano : Jack, I was talking.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : And how is that different than when I was talking?
Vanessa Galiano : Because I'm a lady.
[handing him a folded blue paper]
Vanessa Galiano : Here's my motion to exclude. And if you feel like loosening the knot in the old boxers, you know where to find me. Come on, Migel.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : [as they leave, he hands the motion to Serena] Call Briscoe or Green or whoever screwed this up.
-
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : He's been a cop long enough to know...
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : What, that a suspect understands him?
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : That's not the point. He's dealing with an illegal alien whose first language isn't English.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : Oh, please. Miguel Camacho's lived in this country for six years. He's got a job, he earns a living, he speaks the language. And if he doesn't, he should.
Arthur Branch : Well, don't look at me. Far as I'm concerned, we've got more cuffs on the cops than the criminal.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : The Miranda warnings are a formality. Hell, they've become trite. Everybody knows their rights, Jack.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : I wonder how Judge Larkin will take that argument.
Arthur Branch : Larkin, huh? I hear she had the right turn signal removed from her car.
-
Vanessa Galiano : [Miguel's confession has been excluded] Jack, no hard feelings, right?
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : As a matter of fact...
Vanessa Galiano : Qué será. Okay, let's see what you don't have. You don't have a confession, which means you don't have motive.
A.D.A. Serena Southerlyn : We can prove Miguel's girlfriend was cheating on him.
Vanessa Galiano : Yeah, but you can't prove that he knew about it, which means you don't have a case. Which means that man two dealie is sounding awful good right about now.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : Not to me it's not.
Vanessa Galiano : Oh, I knew you'd say that.
Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy : So why'd you bring it up?
Vanessa Galiano : I love to see you stew in your own juices.
