This just barely touches on what I think a real apache Indian would encounter while Marshalling in Santa Fe back in the 19th century, or even the 20th century. I don't think this matter is hit on nearly enough. After all, when we watched the pilot episode of this, "The Indian" shown on "The Rifleman," we see that Sam Buckhart was not wanted, even by Sweeny the bartender.
I don't think Buckhart would have lasted a day. There was still too much animosity between the Indians and White man. Even though Sam adapted to the white man ways, I don't think he would have really lasted very long as a lawman. More than likely, he'd be shot down while walking out on the street.
That said, I really like the concept. Maybe this was a "in a perfect world" dream the creators had...I really like Buckhart and respect how he has adapted to the fact that the white man, just like the Indian, is just trying to make a living. He doesn't try to lay blame on one or the other.
I liked the times Sam turned and looked at the Marshal with a hurt look on his face. The Marshal WAS attacking his people. Sam had a very good point: his people were there LONG before the white men!!!
