Fear
Prismark101 April 2024
So far Deputy Marshal Sam Buckhart has not come across real hatred because of his race. Some people have made disparaging comments that he is an Indian.

In Fear, Sam Buckhart is nearly strung up because he is an Apache.

Sam and Tess are going back to Santa Fe. They come across an old farm that was attacked by an Indian tribe. As they investigate Tess falls down a well.

Sam cannot get down the well to save her. He needs help and rides off to a neighbouring farm. Only farmer Jasper Mullen hates Apache Indians and immediately attacks Sam Buckhart and ties him up.

You do despair for Sam Buckhart as it is a race against time. No one listens to him, he encounters pure venom.

Then again after overpowering Mullen, Sam takes off with his young son as he could go down to rescue Tess.

The ending is probably a bit too neat.

More like a daughter?

Warning: Spoilers
It's neat seeing this. I'm sure some think it's unrealistic, but sometimes there are people that cross our paths and it's "love at first sight." I think that's the way Sam felt for Tess. I'm sure some of the viewers didn't like it much, because we soon find that Tess has disappeared from the show (I'm not sure which was her last episode).

At one point, Sam declares that he loves Tess like Stevie's father loves him. I see Sam being more a part of Tess's life than just boarding and watching out for her well-being. This episode shows him taking her with him. Now granted, a girl back then in pants hanging out with the town deputy marshal would probably be unheard of, but I like it. It shows a human side of Sam Buckhart - beyond the gun and the badge.

This was another wonderful episode, though I DO believe the man, Jasper, turned from hate to forgiveness just a bit too fast. After all, if he hated the Apaches as much as he said he did - so much he was willing to string one up, I doubt a badge on a shirt would have convince him otherwise...
