It's the beginning of the school year. Recommended by the school's swim coach, Wally is offered a position as a lifeguard at Friends Lake, as the previous lifeguards have all gone back to college. June is concerned that the job is too dangerous for Wally, but Ward thinks it will be a good short term opportunity for Wally. On his first day, Wally learns that despite being a good swimmer, he can't work in the job since state law requires lifeguards to be at least 18 years of age. Instead, he is offered a job as a candy butcher, for the same amount of pay. Despite it not being as prestigious a job, Wally accepts. As disappointed as Wally is, Beaver may be even more disappointed as he has bragged to all his friends about Wally's important and exciting job. What Wally also doesn't know is that his family, Beaver's friends, and some of his own friends are heading to Friends Lake on his first day to watch him in action.
