Bat is running for sheriff at the urging of Earp but Bat is having trouble controlling his temper as his opponent tries to bait him into fights. Bat's girlfriend and her father, a Senator, push Bat to split with Earp but will Bat listen.
Earp has talked Bat into running for sheriff to replace Bassett who is quitting. Earp wants a honest sheriff he can work with and Bat's opponent Lanphere is a crook. Lanphere decides to hire three gunmen to bait the hot headed Bat into a fight to prove he is unstable. The men have some success but Earp breaks it up and supports Bat publicly. Bat's girlfriend Alma Drew is the daughter of Senator Drew, a career politician. The Drews' tell Bat his connection to the unpopular Earp will prevent him from winning and urge him to split with Earp until after the election. Earp reluctantly agrees in private with Senator Drew. He berates Bat and takes his star in public over a minor spat and gun play with Frog Face setup by Lanphere. The incident seems to help Bat with the voters but when he gives his first campaign speech he talks positively about Earp saying he is a friend for life. He loses Alma over the incident but he becomes the next Sheriff of Ford County.—Anonymous
