- Earp's old friend Sam McGuffin stops in Dodge City with a load of freight and his six mules along with a companion. Earp has to intervene when Sam uses a whip on his companion he catches trying to steal something and abandoning Sam.
- Many of the people in the old west were uneducated and often quick to lash out at perceived injustices in rough ways. Earp's friend from Wichita Sam McGuffin stops to visit with Earp. Sam is an old mule skinner hauling a load of freight to a nearby location and headed to Arizona along with helper Lige Fuller. While in Earp's office Sam hears his lead mule and rushes outside to find Lige stealing a packet and leaving. Sam in a flash of anger starts using a bull whip on Lige but is stopped by Earp. After Lige returns the packet, he is sent on his way. After dining with Sam, Earp returns Sam to his camp. They find Sam's lead mule missing but Lige appears saying he "found" the mule and will give his location for the packet. Sam more interested in his lead mule turns over the packet agreeing to let Lige leave on the evening train. Earp and Sam find the missing mule where Lige said he would be - dead. Earp and Sam return to Dodge City to catch Lige who didn't expect them to find the mule so quickly. Sam's anger is raging pitting him against Earp who wants to arrest Lige. Retribution occurs but not as expected.—Anonymous
