  [sobbing, resting her head on her father's chest] 

  John Bevins : [raising his arm, stroking Amelia's hair]  Shhh. Don't cry. Don't cry, Amelia, your Papa's here. Shhh. Don't cry. Oh, look, don't cry, Amelia.

  Dr. Moore : [smiling with surprise/joy that John has regained his will to live, rising from his chair] 

  John Bevins : [smiling slightly]  Don't look so surprised that I'm alive, Doc. That's what you get paid for!

  Dr. Moore : [smiling, tears in his eyes]  I'll get your wife.

  [enters the waiting room] 

  Dr. Moore : Mrs. Bevins? Your husband would like to see you now.

  Bess Bevins : [smiles with joy, heads towards John's room] 

  Charles Ingalls : [overjoyed by the good news]  I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd like a sandwich!

• Bess Bevins : Please stop crying.

  Amelia Bevins : [sobbing]  If you could have heard them.

  Bess Bevins : They didn't know, but you have to expect that sometimes from people.

  Amelia Bevins : Why did we have to move here? I hate it here!

  Bess Bevins : Your father had to find work, you know that.

  Amelia Bevins : On the farm, we were away. The children didn't see him!

  Bess Bevins : Now Amelia, I'll not have you talking like that. Your father loves you; he tries his best. It's hard sometimes, in the beginning, when people first meet. But after a while, they'll get used to it, and they won't say things anymore.

  Amelia Bevins : I don't want him to meet my friends, I don't want them to see him and I don't want them to know he's my father!
