- Laura Ingalls: [sobbing, explaining how she made fun of Mr. Bevins] A new girl came to school today; her name is Amelia. After school, we were walking, and we saw the man that works at the Blind School. We made jokes about him being fat and all, and he's Amelia's father.
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh...
- Laura Ingalls: Oh Ma, we didn't know!
- Caroline Ingalls: The point isn't whether you knew or not, is it? The point is that we should never make unkind remarks about anyone.
- Laura Ingalls: It wasn't just me.
- Caroline Ingalls: Oh, you know better than to use an excuse like that.
- Laura Ingalls: Yes ma'am, I know.
- Caroline Ingalls: I'm sure when you see Amelia tomorrow, you'll apologize.
- Laura Ingalls: What should I say?
- Caroline Ingalls: You thought of the jokes, you can think of an apology.
- Laura Ingalls: Yes, ma'am.
- Caroline Ingalls: Come on, now. You go get changed.
- Laura Ingalls: I really am sorry, Ma.
- Caroline Ingalls: The way to show that is to try to never do it again.
- Laura Ingalls: Yes, ma'am.
- Adam Kendall: You know what I like about this school?
- Mary Ingalls: No, what?
- Adam Kendall: I can kiss you in front of the entire class and no one would ever know.
- Amelia Bevins: [visiting her father in the hospital, tearfully] Papa? You have to be all right. You have to know I love you. I... I know I hurt you, and I don't expect you to love me, but, oh Papa, so many people love you: Mama, and the blind girl, Sue... she loves you so much. So please live for them. Please!
- [sobbing, resting her head on her father's chest]
- John Bevins: [raising his arm, stroking Amelia's hair] Shhh. Don't cry. Don't cry, Amelia, your Papa's here. Shhh. Don't cry. Oh, look, don't cry, Amelia.
- Dr. Moore: [smiling with surprise/joy that John has regained his will to live, rising from his chair]
- John Bevins: [smiling slightly] Don't look so surprised that I'm alive, Doc. That's what you get paid for!
- Dr. Moore: [smiling, tears in his eyes] I'll get your wife.
- [enters the waiting room]
- Dr. Moore: Mrs. Bevins? Your husband would like to see you now.
- Bess Bevins: [smiles with joy, heads towards John's room]
- Charles Ingalls: [overjoyed by the good news] I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd like a sandwich!
- Bess Bevins: Please stop crying.
- Amelia Bevins: [sobbing] If you could have heard them.
- Bess Bevins: They didn't know, but you have to expect that sometimes from people.
- Amelia Bevins: Why did we have to move here? I hate it here!
- Bess Bevins: Your father had to find work, you know that.
- Amelia Bevins: On the farm, we were away. The children didn't see him!
- Bess Bevins: Now Amelia, I'll not have you talking like that. Your father loves you; he tries his best. It's hard sometimes, in the beginning, when people first meet. But after a while, they'll get used to it, and they won't say things anymore.
- Amelia Bevins: I don't want him to meet my friends, I don't want them to see him and I don't want them to know he's my father!
- [unaware that John is just outside and heard their entire conversation]
