Crooked lawyer Cassius Holt and equally dishonest newspaper reporter Smiley Phillips are working to together to take over the newspaper in Cactus City. Colonel Ingersoll, the newspaper owner, has signed his will leaving the paper to Smiley. Smiley switches pistols with honest Sheriff Hubbard and then Holt shoots and kills Colonel Ingersoll and frames Hubbard for it. The Ranger and Tonto are old friends of Hubbard. The Ranger immediately recognizes that the murder gun is slightly different from the pistol that Hubbard carried for years. When Masked Smiley and Holt break Hubbard out of jail and force him to flee for his life, things sure look bad. The Ranger has a plan which calls for him to dress up as Sheriff Hubbard and let the bad guys throw lead at him. That looks even worse! How can the Ranger possibly solve this case?
