Season 5, episode 39, "Outlaws in Greasepaint, is the final episode of a great TV series. For many years the Lone Ranger was the highest rated show on ABC. For most of its run, from 1949-1957, it was shown on Thursday from 730PM-800PM. Reruns were shown on Saturday mornings beginning in 1953. A total of 221 episodes were filmed.
Outlaws in Greasepaint features two married Shakespearean actors Lavinia and Dewitt Favershom (Mary Ellen Kaye and Tom Brown) who rob Wells Fargo gold shipments. They use different costumes and speech patterns to disguise themselves each time. The Ranger and Tonto are soon hot on their trail. To trick Lavinia into revealing the location of the stolen gold, the Ranger makes her think he is Dewitt by wearing Dewitt's Othello costume. It works, but this is one smart lady crook and she soon has the drop on the Ranger. It won't be easy to bring these two thieving thespians to justice! Just for trivia's sake, it is Lavinia Favershom (Mary Ellen Kaye) that is the very last person to ask the famous question, "Who is that masked man?" A great final episode for the series. "HI-YO SILVER, AWAY!!!"
