THE LONER - Pick Me Another Time To Die. - 1966
Lloyd Bridges plays an ex-soldier wandering about the west just after the American Civil War. The series ran for 26 episodes during 1965-66. The series was created by OUTER LIMITS and TWILIGHT ZONE creator, Rod Serling.
Bridges is camped out for the night when the local Sheriff, Steve Darrell, pays him a visit. Darrell warns Bridges that the land he is camping on is owned by a particularly violent rancher. He might want to move on before morning the Sheriff tells him. Darrell is on his way that moment to arrest the ranch owner, Mike Mazurki. Mazurki had been causing trouble in town.
Bridges packs his gear up and follows the trail the Sheriff took. He hears a gunshot ahead and rides on. He comes up quietly in the dark and sees a man with a rifle standing over the body of Sheriff Darrell. The man, Martin Brooks, saddles up and rides off. Bridges come out of the trees to check on Darrell. The man is dead. Just then, someone cracks Bridges one in the head, knocking him unconscious.
When Bridges wakes up, he finds himself locked up in a jail cell. The jail guard, Lewis Charles, tells Bridges he is being charged with killing the Sheriff. It turns out that the man, Mike Mazurki, that Sheriff Darrell had warned him about, had brought him in. Mazurki had arrived just after Bridges, and saw Bridges standing over the murdered Sheriff. Bridges swears his innocence and says he can identify the real killer.
Just then, the town Deputy enters. Bridges sees the man, and knows he is officially in the deep end of trouble. The Deputy is none other than the man, Martin Brooks, whom Bridges had seen at the murder site. Nobody of course believes his story, except for of course, Brooks. Bridges will be put on trial when the circuit judge comes the following week.
Needless to say, Brooks has no intention of letting Bridges live that long. Brooks attempts to stage a fake escape so he can kill Bridges. The deal goes wrong and guard Lewis is shot in error by Brooks. Caught up in the mess is Joan Adams. Adams is the daughter of the slain Sheriff. Bridges manages to wrestle the gun away from Brooks. Bridges applies some "forceful" questioning to Brooks till he admits, it was he, who murdered the Sheriff. It seems that Brooks had grown tired of waiting for Darrell to retire.
