THE LONER – "The House Rules at Mrs. Wayne's" – 1965

This is the eighth episode of the Rod Serling produced western series, THE LONER. The series ran 26 episodes during 1965-66. Lloyd Bridges is an ex US Army soldier working his way west after the Civil War.

Bridges rides into a small town to see a married couple he knew from his days at West Point. He is greeted by Nancy Gates and her nine year-old son, Lindy Davis. Her husband had been shot dead six months before. She invites Bridges to stay a few days before he moves on.

Gates tells Bridges that she does not allow guns or talk of violence in the house. She wants to shield her son from the all the violence in the world. Bridges agrees and soon settles in.

Of course trouble rears it head as Lee Phillips, the town gun-hand takes a dislike to Bridges. He has taken a fancy to Miss Gates and wants her for himself. He is also the main suspect in the death of Gates' husband.

Phillips calls Bridges out, but Bridges refuses to play along. He told Gates he would not carry a gun while in town. The boy, Davis sees this and thinks that Bridges is a coward. Davis then swipes Bridges' Colt revolver and goes looking for Phillips.

Needless to say Bridges is now forced to step up. He stops the boy before he can do something stupid. Bridges now pays a call on Phillips. Guns are drawn and Bridges is first off the mark. The wounded Phillips staggers off with the townsfolk seeing him for the louse he is.

A quick paced episode of an under-rated western series. The episode was written by, Rod Serling. Serling of course was the brains behind, THE OUTER LIMITS and THE TWILLIGHT ZONE.

The director was veteran television man, Allen H Miner.
