THE LONER - To The West of Eden 1965

Lloyd Bridges plays a ex-soldier wandering about the west just after the American Civil War. The series ran for 26 episodes during 1965-66.

Bridges is taking two mares to the town of Saint's Landing. He decides to take the quick route which involves a two day trek across a waterless bit of desert. He is soon is joined by a woman, Ina Balin, who is heading for the same town. All she has is a donkey and a small fig tree sapling. She calls the sapling her "baby".

The two are soon waylaid by a pair of rough looking types, Stewart Moss and Zalman King. They "kindly" offer to take the mares off Bridges' hands. Bridges refuses the offer as he fingers his Spencer repeating rifle. Moss and King smile and ride off.

That evening as Bridges and Balin make camp, several shots are fired at them from out of the dark. It is of course the two swine, Moss and King. They hope to scare off Bridges so they can grab the mares. Bridges just sits tight till morning. Bridges and the woman saddle up and continue their journey.

They reach the river they need to cross in order to reach Saint's Crossing. King and Moss make another move to get Bridges' mares. Lead is exchanged with King being dropped. The fight goes out of Moss and he flees the scene.

A rather weak episode of a series what has been up to this one, quite good.
