Viv's Meddling Mother Bit is the Best Part
kgraovac1 November 2023
Lucy's dating an upwardly mobile lawyer and Viv wants to hurry the relationship along into marriage. Lucy helps Jerry with a cub scout project involving his insect collection right before a big dinner date but loses Jerry's rare butterfly.

One of the running gags of this episode is Vivian acting liking a pushy, meddling mother towards Lucy. This is something we've not seen before, nor will see again. It's unusual but one of the funnier aspects of this installment.

The wonderful Doris Packer is kind of wasted here as the society matron whom Lucy is dining with. The scene is more focused on Lucy chasing bugs to give anything meaty for the guest actors to do. Having Lucy swing at an unseen butterfly gets old very fast. THE LUCY BOOK by Geoffrey Mark Fidelman (1999) states that the butterfly was optically inserted into the episode after filming but I honestly could not see it.

The park scene where Lucy causes chaos features Ellen Corby (THE WALTONS) but it is overdone, with Lucy bumping into the trash collector FOUR times.

Mary Wickes plays a witness on the stand during the court scene, but she - like Doris Packer - is not given enough to do.

I will give this one props for having all the subplots "dovetail" decades before SEINFELD.
