- Tony and his girlfriend of two weeks, Joanna Marsh, are out walking and a man, Canfield, secretly watches them from a distance. The couple kiss and sit by a fountain, and Joanna admits that she wasn't ready for a relationship. She asks what if it all ended and they had to be separated, and Tony insists that it can't happen. He links two of her bracelets together and says that they'll always be together, like the two of them, and he puts the bracelet on Joanna's wrist, takes her hand, and talks about two souls being together. She wonders if it can really happen, and Tony assures her that it will.
The couple kiss and walk away as Canfield watches, and he goes to a payphone and calls a hitman to say that they're on their way and it will have to be a kill. The hitman goes to a car, gets in, and waits in the parking garage. Tony and Joanna walk in and Tony has her wait there while he takes care of the parking ticket. Joanna says that she loves him and they kiss before Tony leaves. The hitman runs Joanna down and then drives out of the garage, and Tony runs over to Joanna.
Later, the EMTs take Joanna away in an ambulance. The officer on the scene says that there's nothing Tony can do for Joanna, so he can't go with her. Tony notes the parking attendant said that there was no license plate on the car that hit her, and he's just a friend but not family. The officer says that they're taking Joanna to Foothill Emergency, but when Tony goes there, there's no record of Joanna. The nurse confirms that it was a redirect when Joanna requested treatment at Zion Memorial because she works there. Tony remembers that Joanna was in public relations at Zion, but she was unconscious when the ambulance took her away.
Tony goes to Zion and discovers that Joanna was admitted two hours ago. A man, Rich, comes over and sits down with Tony. Rich then tells Tony that Joanna was dead on arrival. Tony notes that she was conscious when the ambulance took her away, and she asked them to bring her to Zion. He asks to see her, and Rich says that an uncle came and claimed the body. Rich says that it's not unusual but he'll institute an inquiry, and Tony leaves as Canfield watches him from down the hallway.
Later at his jet, Tony stays up all night looking at slide photos of Joanna, and the two of them with the child patients at Zion. Jerry checks on him and asks if Tony is going to get any sleep, and remembers seeing photos of Tony and Joanna together in the newspaper after Tony did a hospital benefit. Tony abruptly dismisses Jerry, and Jerry suggests that his friend let his grief out. The magician says that there couldn't have been an uncle because Joanna told him that she didn't have any family on the West Coast. He goes to Joanna's apartment to see if her uncle's name is down anywhere,
Tony and Jerry drive to the apartment, and inside two men are searching the place. One man spots Tony pull up outside and one of them calls a warning to the other one, Malcolm Gregorian. The two men leave, and Tony and Jerry find the apartment door ajar. They go in and hear the two searchers going out by a bedroom window. Tony and Jerry go to the window and see the two men driving off.
Later at Zion, Tony meets with Rich in the latter's office. Rich then says that Joanna's personnel file has disappeared, and Tony is surprised that no one knows where Joanna's family lives after she worked there for eight months. Rich has the uncle's name, Walter C. Marsh, and he was staying at a hotel and checked out that morning. The administrator admits that he doesn't know where Marsh took Joanna's body, and Tony asks who in the hospital would know where Joanna came from. Rich confirms that Joanna didn't like to talk about herself so no one knows, and Tony admits that Joanna didn't say anything to him.
Tony talks to one of the children he did the benefit for, Luis Velasquez, and makes a cowboy hat out of tissue paper to get the reticent boy to open up. He teaches Luis how to make a puppet out of a handkerchief.
Jerry is waiting outside, and sees the car from Joanna's apartment pull up and Gregorian go inside. The pilot goes in after Gregorian, and Gregorian takes the stairs. Meanwhile, the other man from the apartment pulls up and gets the frequency on Tony's car phone.
Gregorian ducks into a maintenance closet, eluding Jerry, He turns to his car and joins his partner, and the hitman says that he got Tony's radio frequency.
Luis mentions that Joanna is a prize-winning horsewoman and she gave one to the boy. He shows Tony the medal to prove his claim, and Tony finds a town name--Wellington--on the back. He tells Luisa to get well and he'll make sure personally that Luis gets his riding lessons. Tony makes the handkerchief vanish, thanks Luis, and leaves.
As Tony and Jerry drive away, Jerry tells him that he about seeing the sports car and Gregorian, and lost the man. Tony calls tracing Joanna's medal, and gets her name and her last name of Osborne at the Osborne ranch. Gregorian and his partner are listening in at their motel room via radio, and learns with Tony that the Osborne ranch is in Oregon.
Tony has Jerry fly him to Oregon, and then he drives to the Osborne ranch. Hannah Osborne is out by the barn feeding the chickens, and she tells Tony that her husband Matt is in the barn working. Tony and Hannah go into the barn, and Tony says that he's a friend of Joanna's. He tells them there was an accident, and Matt tells him that they know Joanna is dead. Hannah says that the hospital called her brother and he called them, and Marsh is making all the arrangements. Matt tells Tony that the service is the next day, and Tony tells them that he doesn't think Joanna's death was an accident. Hannah says him that it's a hard truth, and Matt insists that they don't want to talk about it. When Tony says that he wants to talk to Marsh, Matt tells him that they don't know him and don't want his help.
Gregorian comes in with a gun and tells the Osbornes that they'll have more to say to him. He orders Tony to turn around, and when Tony does so the partner comes in and knocks Tony unconscious. The partner then ties Tony's hands up and hangs him upside-down from the rafters, Gregorian pours gasoline on the hay, and as they leave with the Osbornes leave, the two thugs set the barn on fire to make Tony's death look like an "accident".
Tony wakes up and quickly frees himself, but discovers that the barn doors are barred from the outside. He uses a wagon as a battering ram to burst through the doors.
The local sheriff, Sturdivant, locks Tony up and doesn't believe Tony's story that two thugs abducted the Osbornes. Sturdivant says that the two men and the Osbornes would convince him that Tony is telling the truth, but until he finds them he's holding Tony on suspicion. The sheriff leaves Deputy Harold there to keep an eye on Tony, and tells Tony that he can make his phone call... the next day.
Once Sturdivant leaves, Harold settles down to read a magazine. Sturdivant calls Canfield and tells him that Tony is taken care of. Canfield says that he never wants to see Tony again and hangs up. Meanwhile, Tony lures Harold over with some sleight of hand, produces a five-dollar bill, and "multiplies" it. He then produces a note and asks Harold to deliver it to Sturdivant. Harold takes the note and the money and leaves, unaware that Tony pickpocketed the cell door key from him.
The deputy delivers the note, and Sturdivant discovers that it says "Goodbye". He goes to the cell and confirms Tony has escaped, and glares at Harold.
Later, Max and Jerry drive to Tony's magic workshop in a warehouse. Tony is there and Jerry tells him that the police aren't looking for his boss yet. Jerry has gone through mug shots based on the sketch Tony made of Gregorian, and identified the man as a Syndicate hitman who has never been convicted. Tony figures that Rich is involve. Rich admits that he knows where Joanna's body is. Rich has learned that March has the body transferred to a mortuary home, and cremated her per Joanna's wishes. He says that he can't attend the ceremony and it must have just begun.
As Tony and Max leave, Tony figures that cremation is perfect because it leaves no evidence behind. Max doesn't believe its's a conspiracy, but Tony points out that the Syndicate is involved and figures that Joanna isn't dead. They drive to the funeral home as the ceremony concludes, and Tony insists on opening the coffin. The minister says that the casket has been closed by request of the family, and calls up Marsh. Marsh is Canfield, who steps out and says that Joanna told him about Tony. When Canfield says that he can't allow the coffin to be opened, Tony opens it anyway and finds Joanna's body inside. The bracelets are on her wrist, and the minister closes the coffin lid. Tony cries in grief, and Canfield smiles slightly in satisfaction.
As the service concludes, and Tony leaves with the mourners. He and Max go to the Pomeroy house, and Jerry and Dennis meet them there. Max tells Tony that he has to accept the truth about Joanna, and Tony wonders who killed her and why. Dennis notes that Gregorian followed Tony to the Osbornes and suggests that they bugged the Corvette. Jerry figures they decoyed him to get the car phone frequency, and Tony realizes he can use that information to set a trap.
Later, Tony drives in his car and at a specific time, makes a call to Max. Tony says that he knows the whole truth about Joanna and needs to meet with Max at his workshop to tell him. Gregorian and his partner are listening in, and they go to the workshop. As Max starts to call the police, Jerry tells him to let Tony fight his own battle because he loved Joanna. Max reluctantly agrees.
Tony goes to the workshop and finds Joanna waiting for him, alive. Tony stares at her in shock then hugs her, and she says that she had to come there to let him know the truth. She says that she couldn't tell Tony and the government was trying to protect her. Canfield is with the Witness Relocation Program and arranged her "death", including her fake parents. Two years ago Joanna witnessed a top-level Syndicate killing and was the key witness in the trial of the three Syndicate leaders. They were all convicted but they want to make her an example so no one will testify against them in the future. Joanna got restless, changed her name, and got a job at Zion. Then she met Tony and fell in love, and the Syndicate spotted her when their picture was in the paper. Canfield "killed" Joanna again but he didn't count on Tony.
Gregorian and his partner come in through a roof hatch.
Joanna tells Tony that she had to tell him the truth, and confirms that Canfield doesn't know she's there. Tony suggests that they call Canfield because he's the only one who can protect Joanna. The two killers come in and aim their guns at Tony and Joanna. Tony sets off a burst of pyrotechnics, blinding the hitmen, and gets Joanna into a box. It rises up on crane wires, and then opens to reveal that Joanna has disappeared.
Tony runs between the illusions, setting off more pyrotechnics, then goes through a freestanding door and disappears. He appears nearby and drops a bulletproof case by crane on the two hitmen. They're unable to shoot their way out, and Tony "produces" Joanna from another cabinet.
Once the couple call in Canfield at Max's house, Joanna complains that it's unfair. Canfield sympathizes but tells her it's the only way she'll be safe. Max complains that he had to hide his story, and Canfield thanks him for his cooperation. The government has confirmed that the Osbornes are safe, and he and Max leave to give Tony and Joanna a moment alone. Joanna tells Tony that she doesn't want to leave, and he holds her and tells her that they had two weeks together. He says that wherever she is and whoever she'll be, maybe someday they'll be together. Tony and Joanna kiss, and then Joanna leaves.
