The talent agent, Teddy Schnell, has the women disrobe to reveal the bikinis that they're wearing and Tony explains that he does an underwater act in his routine. Laurie assures Tony that she swims very well. Meanwhile, the fake repairman, Jack, alters the wiring on the elevator control panel.
Tony picks two prospects, Cindy and another woman, Laurie Allmont. He tells the two women to come to his magic workshop the next morning, Laurie thanks Tony for the job, saying that she really needed it. Jack tells two of the models that the elevator isn't fixed yet, When Laurie comes out, Jack lets her on the elevator. The doors close and the panel bursts into flame. Tony hears her screams and picks the lock on the elevator door, rescuing her.
Back in Teddy's office, Tony gets Laurie some tea. Teddy says the fire department is sending the arson squad over, and the elevator company hasn't found a work order yet. Laurie insists that it was an accident and says that she's accident-prone. She doesn't want to call her husband since they're not together and he'd just worry. Laurie accepts Tony's offer of a ride to the YWCA where she's staying. As they leave, Tony tells Laurie that she can talk to him about anything. Laurie says that her husband Gary is a deck officer for the Merchant Marines and they were in love, and then they weren't.
Jack goes to a yacht, Zodiac, on the docks. On the ship, Gary is working with Nicholas Olson mapping out all the channels in the harbor. Nicholas asks Gary about Laurie, and Gary abruptly says that he doesn't hear anything from her and doesn't want to talk about her. When Nicholas says that it was just a friendly question, Gary tells him that they have a business arrangement.
Once Gary leaves, Jack comes in and tells Nicholas that Tony saved Laurie, and she got a job with him. He asks Nicholas if he's sure Laurie can hurt them, and Nicholas figures that Gary told her what he's doing and they can't take any chances with $4 million on the line.
The next morning at the workshop, Tony shows Laurie and Laurie one of his illusions. Jack comes to the workshop and tries to find a way in, while Tony rehearses the underwater escape with Laurie. Jack gets in through a window. Meanwhile, Laurie disappears out of the tank and appears in a nearby trunk.
As Max arrives, Tony, Laurie, and Cindy take their bows. He invites Tony to lunch. Meanwhile, Jack sneaks into Laurie's dressing room and watches her. Tony calls for one more run-through, this time with water in the tank. Once the water stops pouring in, Tony and Cindy put the lid on the tan, bring the curtain down, and wheel the trunk out. Laurie is trapped in the tank, and Tony gets the key to the locks and lets Laurie out, cutting her chains with wire cutters.
Later at the jet, Tony tells Max, Jerry, and Dennis that Laurie didn't see anyone sabotage the illusion and told the police as much. Tony is sure the lock didn't jam by itself. Laurie comes in and thanks them, insisting that no one is trying to kill her.
Gary goes to Teddy's office and demands information about his wife.
Jerry serves food, and Tony tells Laure that everyone thinks someone is trying to kill her. He asks where Gary is, figuring Gary can provide a motive. She insists that he can't and says that she's sure Gary loves her despite everything.
After getting the address from Tony, Gary goes to the workshop and introduces himself to Cindy. She offers to make a phone call, and Gary accepts. She calls the jet, and Laurie takes the phone and asks where her husband is. Gary says that he misses her and has a lot to explain, and Tony agrees to have him come to the jet.
As Gary leaves the workshop to go to the airfield, Jack pulls up in a chauffeured limousine and tells Gary to get in. Gary refuses and Jack draws a gun on him, and Gary gets in.
When Gary doesn't show up, Laurie figures that something happened to him. Tony asks her to tell them what she knows, and Laurie finally says that three months ago, the company found out he had been convicted for a felony when he was 19, and fired him. Gary changed, and the couple started to fight a lot. Laurie got the feeling that Gary was driving her away, and she figures that Gary was trying to protect her. She directs them to Nicholas' shipping company, where Gary is now working, and Tony goes to check it out. Laurie wonders why Tony is helping her, and Jerry explains about how Tony was falsely imprisoned and people in trouble get to him.
Jack tells Nicholas that Gary is locked up, and wonders how much good he's going to do them. Nicholas says that Gary will do his job, and tells Jack that they'll release Gary and he'll lead them to Laurie while they rehearse their plan again with anesthetic pistols. They figure Tony might come looking for Gary.
Tony arrives at Nicholas office on the docks and Jack greets him outside the office. When Tony tries to bribe him, Jack directs him around the corner of the building. Jack then gives a signal to a forklift driver. Another worker releases shelves platform full of boxes, cutting off Tony's escape, while the forklift driver sends the forklift loaded with barrels at Tony.
Other workers come out and clean up the mess. Tony manages to find refuge in a hollow and manages to hit the horn on the forklift. The workers hear him and get Tony out.
Gary escapes as intended, and takes a taxi to the jet. Jerry lets Gary in, and Nicholas and Jack come in and shoot Jerry with an anesthetic pistol. Dennis comes in and Nicholas shoots him as well, and tells Laurie that they need Gary to help them and followed him to the jet to get Laurie as leverage.
The workers tell Tony that Gary stopped coming in, and Tony leaves.
Olson and Jack take the Allmonts to the Zodiac and lock Laurie in a cabin. Gary promises to do what he said, and Nicholas says that he'll let Laurie go when they're done, along with Gary. Gary kisses Laurie and goes with Nicholas and Jack.
Max and Tony arrive at the jet, and when Dennis wakes up he says that he recognized Nicholas. Max recognizes the man's name as a an international pirate, and Dennis says that he overheard the name of Nicholas' ship.
Tony and Jerry drive to the dock where the Zodiac is moored, and brings Cindy along with him in her own car. She drives up to the ship, sets up an easel, and takes off her shirt. The guards watch her and don't see Tony sneak aboard the Zodiac. He searches the ship for Laurie and overhears Nicholas telling his crew and Gary that they have to use the anesthetic pistols, as a spark could set off the fuel on the tanker, the Reefer Star, they're hijacking. Three frogmen will board the tanker and take out the guards, and the other pirates will be wearing fake U.S. medical uniforms. Gary reluctantly comes up and says that he'll handle the piloting, and Nicholas warns that they'll have to be on the tanker 18 hours until they rendezvous with their buyer.
Tony hides as the pirates leave the conference room, He then finds Laurie's cabin and he asks her to tell him what Gary is into.
Nicholas put on an officer's uniform and tells Jack to get Laurie. He takes a uniformed Gary up top, while Jack goes into Laurie's cabin and gives her a nurse's uniform to put on. She refuses and slaps him when he threatens to dress her himself.
Cindy, leaving the docks, drives off past Jerry.
Once Laurie is dressed, Jack takes her up top. Tony emerges from the drawer where he's hiding. After Nicholas, Jack, Gary, and Laurie leave in Nicholas's limousine, the Zodiac pulls out. Jerry drives away from the dock, Tony hears the frogmen in the conference room and hides as they come out. They go up on deck, and Tony checks the conference room and finds a spare scuba suit.
Two of the three divers jump into the water, and Tony comes up in the spare suit and tells the third diver that his gun is defective. He produces a playing card and slaps it on the man's face mask, then takes his gun and shoots him with it.
Nicholas and the others arrived at the docked tanker and tell the guard that the ship is quarantined. Meanwhile, the two frogmen swim up to the dock, knock out the guards, and board the tanker.
Jack calls out the captain and tells him that they've had a report of infectious hepatitis among his crew. When the captain confirms that the crew is all below decks securing cargo, Nicholas shoots him unconscious. Another crewman sees them and runs, and one of the frogmen shoots him. As the pirates take out any crewmen above decks, Nicholas has Jack secure Laurie in the hold.
Tony goes to a lifeboat and gets smoke canisters from the emergency supplies, and sees Jack take Laurie past. He takes her inside, ties her to a shelf, and says that he'll let her loose when they're at sea. Laurie asks him if he's going to kill her and Gary, and Jack admits that he is before leaving.
Tony sets off the smoke cylinders and puts them in the ventilation system. Jack finds him and Tony points at the smoke and says the tanker is on fire. He hits the distracted Jack in the face with an appearing cane and runs below deck. Jack follows him along with another frogman, and Tony grabs a can of oil and pours it on the floor behind him. His pursuers slip and fall, knocking themselves unconscious.
Back on deck, Tony yells "Fire!" Nicholas sees Tony, recognizes him, and goes after him, while Gary sounds the fire alarm. Meanwhile, Tony finds Laurie and frees her, but Nicholas arrives and tells them to stop. Gary comes in, jumps Nicholas, and disarms him before Nicholas hits him. Tony takes the bullets out of the gun, and tosses them at the floor. Nicholas slips on them and falls, and Laurie confirms that Gary is all right. The police arrive in response to the alarm and take the pirates away,
Later on the jet, Tony demonstrates some sleight of hand for Gary, Laurie, Cindy, and Max. He shows Cindy how to do it, and Laurie thanks Tony for his help. Max used his influence to get Gary a job as deck officer on a freighter, and the Allmonts leave with Max. Cindy does the trick and botches it, and Tony assures her that she's a natural.
