The bartender, Gilbert, tells Tony that the family Tony rescued in West Berlin called to say that they're doing fine. Gilbert also says that a woman, Pamela, called. Tony has Dominick take Sharon to a table, and Sharon wonders who Pamela is.
Gunther meets with his men and tells them that and prepares to explain the nature of their target. One man, Johnson, says that the plan is perfect but word is that Charles Keegan has asked out. Gunther says that the concern about Charles is valid but unnecessary, and tells the gathered men that Charles' objection will be withdrawn. Johnson speaks for the others, saying that their concern is that Charles has gone clean and might go to the cops. Gunther notes that two billion dollars are at stake and promises that Charles won't get in the way. One man, Lomas, asks who Gunther will make Charles change his mind, and Gunther says that they will. He calls Johnson over, and the man hands Gunther a photo of a woman. Gunther says that with the help of Janet, Charles's daughter, they'll make sure Charles keeps quiet.
Janet is at a museum restoring a stained glass window. Lomas enters through the skylight and drops in. Janet runs for the door and finds Kroll there. They say that she's coming with them, and then runs, toppling a shelf over on them. she gets out of her studio, locking the door behind her, and runs down the street. The two men break down the door and follow her, and she goes to a phone booth and ducks down as the two men come by searching for her.
Janet calls home and Alan Burke answers the phone. Burke says that Charles is out, and asks what has happened. Her two assailants come back and Janet hangs up and hides so her assailants don't spot her. Once they go past, Janet runs to a nearby parked car and tries to start it. The men hear the engine and come back, pounding on the windows, and Janet honks the horn and then drives off. Getting in their care, the two men drive after her.
Tony is performing on stage at the Castle, and Dominick sees Janet runs in. He goes over to greet her, and she says she has to see Tony right away. He has her sit in a booth and goes to get her a glass of white wine. Tony sees her in the audience and smiles, and Janet smiles back. Lomas and Kroll come in and Dominick is called to the bar to take a phone call. Kroll sits down in Janet's booths, presses a gun to her back, and tells her to keep smiling.
Tony notices Janet acting nervous and calls her up as a volunteer. He swaps her for a Chinese assistant, and then runs off the stage after Janet. The two men follow him down to the basement, and Tony puts up a curtain on a board with a fake pair of hands attached. An owl from Tony's magic act flies past them, and the two men leave as the owl lands on Tony's arm. Before he and Janet take elevator up to his apartment.
Tony asks Janet if she ever saw the two men before, and she says she hasn't. She has no idea why they wanted her, and apologizes for bursting into Tony's life again. Janet couldn't reach Charles, and Tony was the only person she knew to turn to. Tony asks is Charlie might have had anything to do with it, and Janet explains that she hasn't talked to her father in over a year. After an argument between the two of them, she ran away, buried herself in her work, and changed her name. Then Charles found her and assigned Oakland, one of his old Prohibition cronies, to watch her.
Tony pours Janet's favorite, drink, and she spots a meal laid out and apologizes for interrupting Tony's date. He remembers Sharon and calls down to Dominick to check on her. He says that she already left after cursing Tony out, Janet says that she couldn't stand Tony being involved with people in trouble, but now she's in trouble and she's glad Tony is involved. She says that there's a friend she could spend the night with, and Tony advises her to spend the night with a relative: Charles. Janet refuses, and Tony tells her that she either goes to the police or Charles.
Kroll calls Gunther to tell him that Janet got away from them. Once he hangs up, Gunther tells Johnson that Janet went to Tony and gives Johnson her location, and warns him not to disappoint him.
Tony drives Janet to Charles' estate and the guard lets them past the gate. She says that she hated the house and during the gang wars when she grew up, all the doors and windows were nailed shut. Burke greets them at the door and Janet coolly walks past him. Her father Charles is waiting, and hugs Janet. He admits that he was going out of his mind worrying about her, and asks if she's all right. Charles isn't happy that Janet went to Tony, and Janet blames her father for the two men coming after her.
After taking a call, Charles says that they should get some feedback from the street in an hour. He wonders why anyone would try to nab Janet, and not to get back at him because he's out of the rackets. Janet doesn't believe him, and Charles says that he tried to tell her before but she wouldn't believe him. She wonders why her father has guards, and Charles says that he has to keep guards. Tony asks if Charles can think of any reason why anyone would want to hold Janet over him, and Charles admits that he still has enemies but they'd be crazy to try and abduct Janet.
Burke comes in and whispers something to Charles. Charles says that they'll talk about it later, and after Burke leaves Charles only says that it's a personal matter. He tells Janet that her room is ready for her, and all her things are still there. Tony reminds Janet that it's the safest place for her to stay, but Janet says that she was never safe in the house. Charles orders her to stay put, tells Tony that she'll wait for him in the car, and leaves.
Charles grumbles that Janet is stubborn and impulsive, just like her mother. Tony asks him if he's sure he doesn't know what it's about, and Charles says that he was partly responsible for busting Tony and Janet up. Despite that, he asks Tony to look after Janet. Tony leaves without a word. Charles goes to the window and watches Tony get into his Corvette with Janet. Burke comes back and gives Charles photos of Oakland's corpse that their men found. Charles talks about he and Oakland went back a long time, and Oakland was a friend. He tells Burke to take care of Oakland's funeral, while he takes cares of Gunther's funeral.
As they drive, Janet says that she always ends up feeling sorry for her father and she doesn't want to feel anything toward him at all. Tony says that she should face the fact that she loves Charles and always will, and that he's going to take her to his place. He assures her that she'll be safe there,
Tony and Janet arrive at the Castle, and Tony asks Dominick to find someone else to take his place on stage. The owner can't, and Tony takes the stage while Dominick tells Gilbert to take good care of Janet. While Tony does a mentalist routine, Johnson enters the Castle and sits down next to Janet at the bar. She goes up to Tony's apartment, and Johnson follows her, sees her enter an out-of-order phone booth, and go through a secret passageway to an elevator.
Johnson takes the elevator up to the apartment and turns off the lights, then advances on her. A short time later, Tony comes up and finds the lights out. Johnson knocks him out and takes Janet out via the fire escape. He drives to an airfield where a helicopter is waiting,
After he wakes up, Tony sketches Kroll from what he saw earlier and shows the drawing to Dominick. Dominick recognizes Kroll as a small-time crook and make some phone calls to find out who he works for. Tony then goes to break the news to Charles. Charles blames Tony, but Tony demands to know who has Janet. The older man claims that he doesn't know, but Tony doesn't believe him. When Charles doesn't answer, Tony calls Lt. Yates. Charles hangs up the phone and says that if they bring in the cops, Janet is dead.
Tony starts walking out, and Charles says that it's Gunther. If Gunther sees any signs of the cops, he'll kill Janet. Tony asks why, and Charles explains that Gunther wanted his help with a heist and he turned him down. He insists that Gunther didn't tell him anything about the heist, and says that they have to cool it and Gunther will let Janet go. Tony doesn't believe it, and Charles admits that he's a lousy father. He didn't want Janet to become a young widow if Tony died, but he's through messing up Janet's life and he's not to end it by pushing Gunther. Tony says that he cares about Janet as well and says that he won't bring in the cops, and leaves.
Outside in his Corvette, Tony calls Dominick and asks what he's found on Kroll. When Tony mentions Gunther, Dominick says that the last he heard Gunther was in prison serving ten years. Tony asks his friend to find out what he can on Gunther, and Dominick says that Kroll dropped out of sight a week ago but he knows where his sister Trudy is.
Tony goes to the tattoo parlor that Trudy works at, and says that he's a friend of Kroll's. When Trudy doesn't believe him, Tony claims that he's a numbers runner with $150 for Kroll. Trudy says that Kroll owe her $100 and if Tony pays his debt, she'll tell him where he can find Kroll. Tony pays up with some bills he produces by sleight of hand, and Trudy directs him to the Roxton Hotel where Kroll has a woman.
Tony waits out the Roxton until Kroll leaves, then follows him to the abandoned jail. Inside, Gunther explains that they're going to break into a mint and going to go in the next day on Sunday when they're not running.
Kroll goes to the prison gate and a guard lets him in.
Gunther explains that there's a shipping and receiving building across the street from the mint, and the buildings are connected by a tunnel under the street.
Tony walks past the gate and drops a couple of bills. Once he moves along, the guard comes out to get the bill and Tony slips through the gate. He spots the light from the window of the room where Gunther is holding the briefing, and picks a lock on a side door to get in.
Gunther explains that the flaw in the mint security are their trucks, that leave and return at regular intervals. The truck they're interested in returns at dawn, and he has Lomas bring Janet in.
Tony spots Lomas entering the cell block where Janet is imprisoned. He takes her to the conference room as Tony watches from down the hall. Gunther calls Charles and puts Janet on the line, and she tell her father that she's okay. Charles says that he loves her, and Janet says that she knows and starts to apologize. Gunther takes the phone and tells Charles that Janet will stay undamaged as long as Charles remains silent.
Lomas takes Janet back to her cell and Tony watches from down the hallway. Once Lomas leaves, Tony goes to the cell door and starts picking the lock. She tells him what's going on, but she doesn't know anything about Gunther's job.
Johnson and the others get in the helicopter, and Johnson sends Lomas to get Janet. As Lomas comes down the hall, Tony's lock pick breaks in the lock.
