- TriviaIn one of Magnum's voiceovers he refers to Luther's colleagues as being like, "something out of a Sam Spade movie." Elisha Cook Jr., who plays Icepick, was in the most famous Sam Spade movie of all, the classic film noir, The Maltese Falcon (1941), in which he plays the hot-headed punk who killed Floyd Thursby and Captain Jacoby, and torched Jacoby's ship.
- GoofsMagnum states that the dot matrix output came not necessarily from the same printer, but from the same computer. This is impossible to determine, as the fonts for the old impact printers resided on the printer, not the computer. The person operating the computer could choose one of around a half dozen type styles, but the actual look of the fonts were determined by the printer manufacturer, not the computer or the word processing app. The same type style (such as "sans serif") could come out looking short and wide on an Epson but more square on an HP.
- Quotes
Luther H. Gillis: We're talking about so you want to be a private eye by Luther Gillis, it's supposed to...
[Magnum cuts his phone call]
Magnum: It's supposed to sucker you to Hawaii, look at this Luther.
[Shows him a piece of paper]
Luther H. Gillis: Well, big deal, it was typed on the same typewriter so what?
Magnum: Not the same typewriter, the same computer. This was done by dot matrix.
Luther H. Gillis: Who's Dot Matrix and what's she got to do with this?
Magnum: She's a computer Luther! Now come on look at this! Lloyd DeWitt accessed into the academy's computer just to get you to Hawaii.
Luther H. Gillis: Holy cow!
I hope the bar is raised at some point in this season, with comedy taking a backseat to dramatic action plots about Cold War intelligence and worldly crime bosses, as in many previous episodes.
And hopefully WITHOUT Luther.
