Excellent episode revealing more about the mysterious Castillo
DVD_Connoisseur23 March 2007
For those who may have originally dismissed Martin Castillo as a boring suit when he arrived to replace the ill-fated Rodriguez, this episode reveals the mysterious lieutenant to be one of the most interesting characters in the show.

Opening with a flashback of a younger Castillo enjoying a dip in the sea and enjoying time with his beautiful wife, the second part of "Golden Triangle" wastes no time in getting down to business. With a well-scripted plot, great direction and superb performances, this is a corking 45 minutes of television. The budget is evident in every scene and there's plenty of impressive machinery on display, including a fridge-white Lamborghini Countach.

The always watchable Joan Chen plays Castillo's wife from his past, May Ying.

A very satisfying episode - 10 out of 10.

Castillo is again awesome and brilliant

The Golden Triangle Part II is an excellent and awesome second part to an excellent two part story. This episode also features absolutely brilliant acting by Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, Saundra Santiago, Michael Talbott, John Diehl, Olivia Brown, Edward James Olmos, John Santucci, Keye Luke and Joan Chen. Lt Castillo must track down his old enemy Gl Lao Li who has passed his organizations to his grandsons. Gl Lao Li has kidnapped Castillo's long lost wife to ensure their escape from prosecution. Gl Lao Li is a very dangerous and malicious man and is informing all the Thais about Castillo. Castillo has found out that his long lost wife is married now and has a kid but protects her and her husband from getting killed by Lao Li because he still cares about Mai Ying very much. This second part is also action packed and very intense and it is awesome to see the way Castillo reacts to the evil and cocky ex CIA Man Dale Menton when Menton insults Castillo and it is awesome to see Castillo when he is face to face with the manipulative Lao Li.

A great conclusion to a two part story

Warning: Spoilers
After the bombshell of learning that Lt. Castillo had a wife at the end of the previous instalment we hear that he believed that she had died several years previously when he was working for the DEA in Thailand. In order to find out where is old adversary Gen. Lao Li is Crockett and Tubbs bring in Dale Menton a sleazy ex-CIA man who had assisted the General in Thailand because it suited US interests at the time; he even goads Castillo by telling him how he'd set him up to be ambushed. When Castillo sees Lao Li he is told that he has moved to Florida to retire and has no intention of breaking any law; Castillo is unconvinced and remains suspicious so maintains surveillance on the general's family. A lead from Noogie sends them to a restaurant where they catch the general's grandsons selling a large quantity of heroin... now he just has to see how the general will act.

This episode was a great conclusion to the story which showed that rather than being a square by the book character Castillo is possibly the coolest character in the department; of course it helps that he is played by an actor as good as Edward James Olmos. Guest star John Santucci was suitably sleazy as Dale Menton. The story was great although it was obvious that the grandsons were wrong'uns when we saw them fitting a particularly naff musical horn in a beautiful Lamborghini! The ending wasn't what I had expected but the slight twist made it better... I won't spoil it by saying how though.

Golden Triangle: Part 2
Prismark1010 March 2021
This is very much a character piece about Castillo but there was no need for that opening. Where Castillo is in his budgie smugglers having a swim on the beach.

He goes head to head with General Lao Li who claims to have retired in Miami. There is also a former DEA agent who betrayed Castillo and now providing services for Li.

A later scene shows that Li is just biding his time. His grandchildren do not have his patience or brains. They also discover that grandad is no harmless old coot.

The episode highlights just what a honorable man Castillo is. He initially turns down Crockett and Tubbs help to find his wife. As the Miami police department should not be his personal detective agency.

When Castillo does reunite with his wife, he finds out that she has married another man and has a child with him.

The ending is straight out of Casablanca.
