Escandero quotes two lines from an unnamed poem: "Oh, what a tangled web we weave; When first we practice to deceive!" He then asks the Crocketts if they're familiar with the Bard, or William Shakespeare. However, the lines are actually not Shakespeare's, although they are often mistakenly attributed to him. It's an excerpt from Canto VI, XVII of the epic poem Marmion by the famous Scottish poet Sir Walter Scott about the Battle of Flodden that was fought in 1513. The poem was published in 1808.
