Distracted by love
Tweekums26 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode opens in dramatic style as three punks run somebody off the road then head to a hot dog joint and rob and kill somebody who appears to be just a customer but it turns out he and the hot dog stand are part of an illegal gambling operation. It isn't long before they strike again. Crockett and Tubbs are soon on the case although Crockett's mind is on something other than work... he has a new girlfriend, Brenda, and since he started dating her, his work has been slipping. The rest of the team clearly notice but tolerate it until one day he oversleeps and Tubbs gets beaten while on a stakeout. Clearly Crockett will have to decide whether he wants Brenda or the job.

This episode had a fair few action moments and the makers made up for the fact that they couldn't show copious amounts of blood by having the bad guys shoot a ketchup bottle not once but twice, the second time covering Izzy with a splattering of red! The punks were a little bit over the top; I can't believe that nobody would have noticed one of them had a shotgun in the diner scene until he shot somebody... even when he waved it in Izzy's face nobody else seemed to notice! Crockett's romance could have been a distraction from the case for the viewers as well as Crockett but it was well handled and Kim Greist did a good job as Brenda; it was also nice that they didn't resort to the cliché of having her involved in the case or getting killed in the crossfire. Miami Vice has got a bit of a reputation for showing off lots of beautiful women in swimsuits but this episode is clearly one for the ladies as Don Johnson spends much of it without his shirt! Overall this was a decent episode with a good mix of excitement, romance and a touch of comedy.

Warning: Spoilers
Another middle of the road episode but at least it held your attention more than the last. Probably half the episode was devoted to Crocket's sudden relationship. You know there's no stakes and that she won't be around long term so none of it evokes any emotion. Total melodrama. There are *a lot* of musical montages but at least a lot of ocean views and a nice house to look at. Loved PMT's sax solo. The criminals belong to a typical 80s trope: nameless white, fake punk, nihilist types who were well parodied in The Big Lebowski and only ever existed in tv and movies. Bad to the Bone as their soundtrack makes your eyes roll from the start. Izzy is the show's bright spot, although there's we're left needing to know why he's walking in clogs at the end. Very bizarre business to come up with but he did steal the episode. I almost forgot - the execution of the "punks" at the end does not age well. It's not like the show is the picture of by-the-book, legal police work. But this particular killing by Tubbs was especially cold and disturbing in 2021. I suppose the writers felt he somehow earned it by getting beat up earlier?

Love brings a high cost
Mr-Fusion13 April 2016
The core of 'Nobody Lives Forever' is an spotlight on how a Vice detective can't afford to get distracted by a romantic relationship. And that makes for good drama, but the Brenda character doesn't sit well with me. She's been on the St. Vitus, and heard gunfire during a love struck phone call - she knows how chained to the job Crockett is. Yet she still demands a cozy spot of importance in his life. The job's already cost him a marriage. Does she really think he'll drop it for a fling? I dunno, there's just not much to her beyond just a problem for the guy. It'd be worse if she wasn't good-looking.

Having said that, it's got talent in the guest star department (Martin Ferrero and the always-fascinating Giancarlo Esposito), good action and a resonant closing shot of two partners mending differences.

Bonus: Red 7's 'Heartbeat'. Incredible song. It worked great in "Manhunter" and it's put to fantastic use here, too.

A splendid episode of this classic series
DVD_Connoisseur16 May 2007
"Nobody Lives Forever" is a superb episode of "Miami Vice" from director Jim Johnston. Beginning with action accompanied by George Thorogood's "Bad To The Bone", the opening sequence climaxes with the ketchup strewn destruction of a lunch truck. Good, messy fun!

There's romance in the air for Sonny Crockett who has fallen for the undeniable charms of beautiful, up-market Brenda, played by Kim ("Manhunter") Greist. As a result of this relationship, Crockett's work starts to suffer, posing serious questions about his future as an undercover cop.

There's a terrific soundtrack to this episode, including Red 7's "Heartbeat". This seems to be a Mann favourite - he used this for the end titles of the aforementioned "Manhunter". Another memorable track is Glenn Frey's "New Love".

Don Johnson's performance is pitch perfect and the episode is both realistic and moving.

There's great continuity with earlier story lines. Here, mention is made of the untouchable Lombard, last seen in "One Eyed Jack."

Lots of gunfire, a little too heavy on the romance.
FloridaFred26 September 2020
Lots of action from three young bad guys with a death wish. "Nobody Lives Forever" is almost too heavy on the romance, but those love scenes are a necessary ingredient for the plot. Crockett is so head over heels for "Brenda" (actress Kim Greist) that he is approaching dereliction of duty. When he misses an opportunity to bust the bad guys, we see one of the greatest "Castillo Staredowns" in the entire 5-year run of Miami Vice. The writers should have spent more time developing Morgan's bookmaking setup, and the food trucks he uses as a front. That illegal gambling operation explains why Vice, and not just the Homicide Division, is brought in to take down the crooks. But you can almost miss that point, if you aren't paying close attention. One interesting scene is where Morgan (actor Peter Friedman) and his enforcer Ricky (actor Giancarlo Esposito) mention "Lombard" as possibly the guy who is robbing their bookies. Lombard (actor Dennis Farina) is a well-known crime figure/character who appears on other episodes of Miami Vice. Another good scene is where Gina (actress Saundra Santiago) reproaches Crockett for only using her as "an occasional pit-stop". But the icing on the cake for this episode are the great scenes involving Izzy Moreno (actor Martin Ferrero). He is at his absolute best in "Nobody Lives Forever".

Nobody Lives Forever

I wonder where Michael Mann got the idea to cast Kim Greist for Manhunter?

Greist plays Brenda, a well heeled architect and well into a romance with Crockett. I leads to Crockett shirking his duties which leaves Tubbs in danger. It also means Castille gives Crockett a steely staredown.

Three wacko punks are in town with an itchy trigger finger and looking to make easy money. They knock off a bookie and a hot dog stand.

That is not the end of their rampage but they have made enemies of the police and criminals.

There is some really good music here and some arty shots of Crockett in the pool with Brenda. It is left to Tubbs to tell Brenda that she might not be the type to be a cop's wife.

The punks are an acquired taste. Their behaviour is certainly of a trio that are high on drugs and as Izzy remarks, they are already dead.

So did she dump Don or go back to Will hmmm and this end up in CSI's hands
PatrynXX13 July 2020
There was something in the hook in the music that reminded me of an undertone that was playing before he figured out the tapes were connected in Manhunter. So I looked up. Haven't never watched this. No it can't be. Never know maybe this is the prequel to Manhunter in theory. :P very loosely. So to strike off any doubt he played Heartbeat. go figure.. okay well fine. made it obvious which came first the chicken or the egg. apparently neither the pebble did it. I'll have to file away this one under Manhunter lore. No spoilers on this just well except for that shot of the bosses eyes. Dang good work director/ camera operator !!!!

Watching some top-rated MVs. Watched this one almost by accident.

Under-rated. The romance is kind of distracting, since we know nothing will come of it. Bad To The Bone is a great song, but maybe too cliche for its usage by the over-the-top punks. The best parts of this one is dialogue between Sonny & Tubbs, and I think it has some of the best set design and night cinematography of the entire 1st season.

This one shows Miami off well.

Solid. May not be in Top 50, but still beats any season 4 & 5 episode.
v-266404 January 2024
Story is simple, based on some punks going wild and hitting random people or places without any beforehand action plan.

This makes hard to learn their pattern and to catch them for vice cops. What happens in a meantime is devoted to Crockett's romance story.

Well directed, pastels colors are what they should be and Jan Hammer music score haunts ears easily. These are key elements of MV episode that went missing in seasons 4 & 5.
