"You know how tricky it is living next to your mother-in-law."
mark.waltz1 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So says Eve describing the experience of having Herb's mother living in the garage apartment (actually a garage converted INTO an apartment, not an upstairs dwelling...), and adding a look of how this exposes her for being meddling. In spite of their promising that they will not interfere in the decorating of the garage apartment when Jerry and Suzie move in, they can't help but snoop, made obvious when Kay manipulates Eve into confessing that she wants to help them redecorate even without Jerry and Suzie's permission. A very funny sequence has Eve going into the apartment after they leave, gasping in horror at the spray painted dresser and garish artwork, moving around knickknacks and pillows, then hiding in the shower when Kay sneaks in, basically changing everything back to the way it was before.

Obviously filmed before the episode where Jerry was first heard referring to Eve as "Mother Hubbard", this has Eve saying that as the OK way for Jerry to refer to her and acting horrified by the sound of it. The audience is howling with laughter over this line which will become a running gag throughout the show's two seasons. Kay shows off her singing talents by braying "Eve and Kay made fools of themselves" after they are exposed for sneaking around, It gets even worse when the Buells and Hubbards learn of their intentions to have a dinner party, assuming that they were the ones being invited. Both the husbands and wives wait patiently for the invitation which never comes, but that does not stop Eve and Kay from interfering, and giving a repeat performance of Kay's previous bellowing.

This is the first episode where Jerry Fogel and Debbie Watson are featured for more than just a few short scenes, but of course, the laughs come faster and more furious when Eve and Kay are the focus, culminating with a scene of them on the garage apartment wall as it is brought up. That makes for one of the funniest moments of the series, let alone classic comedy of the 1960's which in many cases hasn't stood the test of time. The DVD of the series adds on a Glycerone commercial, an interesting view of a product that no longer exists.

Starting The Newlyweds Without Bob Eubanks
DKosty12314 April 2011
Warning: Spoilers
While Eubanks is hosting the game on ABC, the Hubbards and the Buells are trying to help their kids new marriage. When they visit the apartment they have rented they are horrified. Eve & Kay come home & tell their husbands they got the security deposit and canceled their lease.

The idea then is to fix up the Hubbards garage apt for the kids to start out in. The race is on to get it fixed up before the kids get home to see it. The In-Laws win by a sofa.

Eve & Kay get their wish, the kids are only 40 feet away from Eve's house so they can butt into their lives at the maximum potential. This apartment is about to become the sight of quite a few good physical and sight gags. Works out well for everyone including the script writers.
