The Munsters - John Doe Munster
Scarecrow-8816 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So Herman is out and about when he happens to be clunked on the head by a 300 pound safe (!) when the rope breaks while workmen try to lift it to a second story window. Result: Herman gets amnesia and can't remember his family! So as John Doe he is adopted by wife Lily, Grandpa, and Marilyn (the court hearing to adopt is a gas!), and is child-like, treated as the new son until they hope he can snap out of his amnesia! When he's not fighting with Eddie over the kite or who gets more attention (!), Herman is all giddy about his time watching television, kicking the football (which explodes when impacting with his foot!) in the yard, and practicing with the whip from "Rudolph Smith" (Grandpa disguised as a lothario as Lily hopes to make her Hermie jealous with the two of them pretending they're courting!). Lily will stop at nothing to get her husband back, but not matter what she does Herman's juvenile personality seems "stuck". It might just take Eddie goofing off with his kite on top of the house (!) in order to get Herman out of his state of boyhood immaturity… Fred Gwynn's "kidding around" is a hoot, acting like this (giant) child while poor Lily agonizes over his loss of memory. Al Lewis, dressed as some sort of silent film matinée idol, as Rudolph Smith is quite a sight. Eddie and Herman arguing over the kite while Lily has to separate them, and Herman calling her "Mommy" with her reacting in angst are highlights. Favorite scene: the judge in the court (Willis Bouchey; the doc in the Twilight Zone episode, "The Masks) reacting to Herman's presence and perplexed that Lily and Grandpa would want to adopt him, asking them multiple times if they were sure! The police station visit with the two police officers quizzically getting a look at Lily and Grandpa, before bringing out Herman to see if he can remember them, further plays off the "oddities in public" shtick the show made a vital part of its charm. "My Three Sons" gets some love by Grandpa who wants badly to watch his "favorite show" which Lily puts the kibosh on in favor of going to the station to pick up her hubby. Fans of the show will enjoy Gwynn's silly antics, I'm certain.

Why didn't they check his wallet for his drivers license? Guess it would've made a shorter episode. Still a laugh fest !
