Mike should have just picked his girlfriend
FlushingCaps1 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At Mike's college, two guys are discussing who to stick with an assignment they want no part of-based on what happened last year, they said. The assignment is to judge a beauty contest. In walks Mike, and before they speak to him, we know he will be the one.

The contest is a really strange one. Several dozen coeds have sent in 8 x 10 photos of themselves-only head shots. Mike is to be the only judge and there is no pageant (despite the storyline on IMDB). He simply looks at the faces in the pictures and decides which girl is the prettiest.

Except before picking the winner, he chooses four "finalists" and writes a story that includes their photos for the school newspaper. The story tells the world that he is the sole judge in this contest. This gives the young women a chance to try to influence him by meeting him and dating him. Two of them do just that. The third comes up to him and tries to intimidate him because she is half a foot taller than he is (she claims to be goalie on the field hockey team.) She takes him in her arms and gives him a big kiss, but doesn't offer to date him.

Mike goes to visit the fourth finalist and finds her totally indifferent, saying her sorority wanted her to enter and she doesn't care about the contest at all. We viewers knew immediately she would be proclaimed the winner.

The four women are all summoned to the newspaper office where several photographers are there. Mike comes in-not for any final judging, only to announce his selection. Indeed, that fourth girl, the one who didn't care was chosen because of one reason-Mike decided she was the prettiest.

When he began to look over the 59 entrants' photos, Mike learned that his current girlfriend was one of the contestants, but he decided she wasn't pretty enough to win, and, naturally, when told this, she dumped him. I don't think this is a big surprise spoiler if I report that she changed her mind at the show's end. I would think that Mike would really believe his most-attractive girlfriend WAS the prettiest and choose her because he thinks she's the prettiest. Another reason why any judge of such a contest should not know any of the contestants.

The subplot had Chip and Sudsy deciding to have their own beauty contest for the girls they knew in 4th grade. (4th-grade, meaning Chip is again 9 years old, now nearly a year after he celebrated his 10th birthday.) Somehow they get photos of all the girls and they look them over, and we see them awarding an old golf trophy of Steve's to a girl who had to truly be about the least attractive of any in their room-a rather large, tough-looking girl. They said they picked her because she could protect them from anyone who wants to hit them.

Parts that didn't seem realistic included the young boys somehow obtaining photos of every girl in the class. They weren't 3 x 5 snapshots, but larger photos, which would have cost a relatively-large sum of money I cannot believe the boys would spend on this "contest," even if they could get the girls to pose for them. Likely, 9-year-old girls wouldn't want anything to do with this, and I doubt the school would approve.

As for the college contest-what sort of beauty contest simply has one judge, not several, and one whose identity is made known to the contestants days before the winner is announced? How would they let someone be a judge whose girlfriend is one of the contestants, especially if he is the only judge?

The biggest thing that makes no sense is that he is to judge only on those photos of the girls' heads. Not even one shot showing the whole body? What a joke of a contest that is. They should have called it the "Beautiful face and hair" contest.

Of course, there was no point of a story showing four finalists days before one is selected. How would one look over dozens of photos, judge these four to be the best and not already have decided which one is prettiest? He was supposed to pick out the top four, and then days later look over the same photos and THEN decide which one he liked best? Ridiculously unrealistic!

The ONLY way a real contest would have the judges (there's always more than one) pick four finalists and later pick a winner is if they have an additional something to judge after selecting the finalists. For a beauty contest, this could be a swimsuit appearance by each, or something else. It just made the whole contest seem stupid for the way it was done. This forces me to give this episode only a 4 out of 10.
