When Joyce picks up the phone to call the police, the label on the rotary dial shows the number 184-4275, along with the area code "212", which would have been correct at the time for all parts of New York City. The number, however, could not be real. Telephone numbers have never begun with "1". When 7-digit numbers were introduced, the first two were letters, which represented the name of the exchange. The caller then dialed the numbers associated on the dial with those letters, followed by the rest of the number. There are no letters on the telephone dial associated with "1". "ABC" is assigned to "2", and so forth, through the alphabet.
