Nice pilot, but not quite up to the later standard

I really like this show. It's understated comedy; a study in rehearsed superficiality and self-irony. The show as a whole I've rated an 8 out of 10.

This double-length pilot episode is good, but not quite as good as the later episodes. While it's a dream to see Li Ann actually get it on with the two guys, the action and comedy itself could have been just a little bit stronger here. There are some very good moments, but not quite enough. Still, it's good enough to warrant a 7 rating, and that's not too shabby!

Apart from gawking at Sandrine Holt/Li Ann, the best thing about the show is Mack's cheekiness. His character has enormous self-confidence, and is also very self-righteous, but not in an entirely serious way. He's always very funny.

I like Victor, too. He's the polar opposite of Mack (except when it comes to fighting skills, where they're exactly matched); constantly serious, bordering on the bitter - and understandably, too, since he largely lost Li Ann because of Mack - but who's she kidding? We know she loves both of them! But caught between them, how can she give in to either of them (or both of them) with her dignity intact? It's the perfect, unsolvable, unrequitable love triangle!

Great stuff.

My rating of the pilot: 7 ouf of 10.
