- [Will is packing his stuff in the car with Tucker and Bailey arrives to say goodbye]
- Will McCorkle: Hey.
- Bailey Salinger: Hey.
- Bailey Salinger: So you're ready to roll, huh?
- Will McCorkle: Yeah, in a few. So, um, how's the... How's the jeep?
- Bailey Salinger: Ah, it drives. It has a bit of a shimmy if you get over 60, but that's probably a good thing.
- Will McCorkle: That's it?
- Bailey Salinger: I just wanted to say, um, you know, take care of yourself.
- Will McCorkle: Yeah. You too.
- Bailey Salinger: Okay.
- Will McCorkle: So...
- [they shake hands and he goes to the car]
- Bailey Salinger: [he sees the car leaving] Later.
- [Charlie and Kirsten are going downstairs, moving boxes for her apartment]
- Charlie Salinger: You really need all this stuff in Monterey? I mean, this is all your CDs.
- Kirsten Bennett: Three days ago you said this stuff was a fire hazard.
- Charlie Salinger: All I'm saying is you don't have to move everything you own.
- Kirsten Bennett: I'm not, Charlie. And I'm not forwarding my mail. And I'm not gonna give out my number down there, 'cause I still live here, okay?
- [they drop the boxes and sigh]
- Kirsten Bennett: Oh, God, I still have a bunch of boxes left.
- Charlie Salinger: Wait. Wait. Wait. Could you just? Could we just sit for a minute?
- Kirsten Bennett: You don't wanna get this done first?
- Charlie Salinger: No. No. All we ever do is get stuff done. That's not enough.
- [they sit in the stairs]
- Charlie Salinger: I mean, I-- I-- I actually-- I miss you. These last few days I miss you.
- Kirsten Bennett: Charlie
- Charlie Salinger: And I don't get it. I... I thought you said you were happy with the way things were. We both said it. That-- That things were really clicking for us.
- Kirsten Bennett: Yeah, they are.
- Charlie Salinger: Then why would you change everything?
- Kirsten Bennett: Because I really want this job. And I want all of this too.
- [looks at the house]
- Kirsten Bennett: I want you.
- Charlie Salinger: Yeah, well, it's-- It's not that simple.
- Kirsten Bennett: Okay. Then, we'll work on it. We'll talk about stuff, about problems, and we'll figure it out, okay?
- Charlie Salinger: I just... I keep thinking that none of this would've happened if we just decided to get married.
- Kirsten Bennett: I don't know. Maybe. Maybe if we were married, I would be able to look at the job and say I can give that up. But we're not married. And... And... And that kind of sacrifice, Charlie, I-I-I just... This is who we are right now. This is where I am right now. I know it's not perfect, but I like it like this.
- [Julia comes home while Griffin is watching TV]
- Griffin Holbrook: Hey. Oh, you're home early. Cool.
- Julia Salinger: [mad] Cool?
- Griffin Holbrook: Okay. It's not cool. You're mad?
- Julia Salinger: What were you thinking? I mean, what could possibly have been going on in your brain to think that it was okay to talk to my boss like that?
- Griffin Holbrook: What was I supposed to do, sit there and watch him rag on you?
- Julia Salinger: Yes. Yeah.
- Griffin Holbrook: Well, no-- Nobody treats you like that. I don't care who he is.
- Julia Salinger: Oh, Griffin, I got fired. Okay?
- Griffin Holbrook: 'Cause of that Xeroxing thing?
- Julia Salinger: No. No, because of you.
- Griffin Holbrook: What? So you got fired from some lousy job you hated anyway. Big deal. You don't need to be working for that jerk.
- Julia Salinger: I needed a recommendation from that jerk. I needed this job for college, and y-you ruined that for me. I am so tired of this stuff. I'm sorry, Griffin, but I am. I used to think it was cool, you know, the way that you would show up whenever you wanted and be aloof and create all these dramas. I used to think that that made you this really romantic guy.
- Griffin Holbrook: What do you mean used to?
- Julia Salinger: I love you, Griffin, but stuff has happened to me, and I am different now. And there are things that I want. Only you... You're just
- [sighs]
- Julia Salinger: You're just still hanging around. I mean, isn't there anything that you want?
- Griffin Holbrook: I want you.
- Julia Salinger: No. I mean, out of life.
- Griffin Holbrook: Yeah. You.
- Julia Salinger: That's not enough.
- [Claudia, with Byron's jacket, is talking to Charlie at the restaurant]
- Claudia Salinger: I, um... I'm glad I'm meeting him here. I mean, he won't even look at me when Julia's around.
- Charlie Salinger: So you're just gonna dump him, huh?
- Claudia Salinger: Of course I'm gonna dump him. Not until after I tell him what a jerk he is and throw his jacket in his face.
- Charlie Salinger: Man, I wouldn't wanna be in his shoes right now.
- Claudia Salinger: Look, he deserves what he's gonna get, Charlie. I mean, I'm just... I'm gonna tell him off and kick him out, and there is nothing he can say that's gonna change my mind. Unless he's really, really sweet. And he begs... like, a lot.
- [Griffin is fixing Julia's car and she approaches him]
- Julia Salinger: It's okay. I'm not gonna yell at you. I'm kind of tired of yelling at you.
- Griffin Holbrook: Yeah, that's good, 'cause I'm kind of tired of you yelling at me.
- Julia Salinger: So anyways, I... I saw some stuff in the paper that doesn't look too bad. There's a messenger job downtown, so you could ride your bike all day, and there's a storage place that's looking for a live-in manager, so
- Griffin Holbrook: I've, uh... Yeah, sort of got that covered.
- Julia Salinger: Oh, you do? That's-- That's great.
- Griffin Holbrook: Yeah. That buddy of mine, uh, made a few phone calls, and, uh, I'm gonna catch up with the boat down in San Diego.
- Julia Salinger: [surprised] Wait, uh, you're gonna leave?
- Griffin Holbrook: Yeah. I-I've just been thinking about what you told me about needing something else in my life that matters to me.
- Julia Salinger: Yeah, but I didn't say anything about leaving. Griffin, I-I thought we were gonna figure this out together. And now you're just... You're gonna run away?
- Griffin Holbrook: I'm coming back. I mean, that's the whole point. It's just things are so screwy with us right now. It's kind of my fault. I mean, you're starting to hate me.
- Julia Salinger: I don't hate you.
- Griffin Holbrook: You know what I mean. I mean, that's exactly what I was afraid of, that I was gonna screw this up. If I keep hanging around here, it's only gonna get worse. So it's up to me. And I gotta do something about that. About me. That make sense?
- Julia Salinger: [thinking] We do this a lot, huh?
- Griffin Holbrook: Say goodbye?
- Julia Salinger: Yeah. It's kind of weird.
- Griffin Holbrook: Well, I fixed your mirror. The door still kind of sticks.
- Julia Salinger: Well, I'll think about you every time I crawl across the front seat. And, um, you can fix it when you get back.
- [in the night, Charlie and Kirsten are talking by the phone, while having dinner]
- Charlie Salinger: I told Owen that you'd be home in a few days. And he didn't get the concept, so I said it was like 85 episodes of Muppet Babies. It freaked him out.
- Kirsten Bennett: [smiling] Tell him I'll bring him a present. So did I get any good mail?
- Charlie Salinger: [checking mail] Um, well, you may have won a vacation home in Guadalupe.
- Kirsten Bennett: Ha. Great. I'm still getting issues of Modern Macramé from the last time I almost won.
- Charlie Salinger: What's for dinner?
- Kirsten Bennett: Kung Pao chicken with extra MSG. You?
- Charlie Salinger: Um, aspartame and Red Dye No. 2.
- Kirsten Bennett: So how'd it go with the stucco guy?
- Charlie Salinger: Um, he wanted to make it into a remodel, but I eventually got him to talk him out of his vision and patch the hole.
- [Julia is solving a puzzle while Griffin reads the diary in the backyard]
- Julia Salinger: Hm. Romantic rendezvous, five letters.
- Griffin Holbrook: Uh, date? Hey, check it out. Camping in Big Sur. Just, you know, quit your job...
- Julia Salinger: Apartments, jobs, in that order.
- Griffin Holbrook: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It would have been nice, though, huh?
- Julia Salinger: Yeah. Tryst. That's it. T-R-Y-S
- Griffin Holbrook: Hey?
- Julia Salinger: Hm? T.
- [he starts tickling her and she laughs, while Claudia watches them]
- Julia Salinger: No. No!
