Dressed for a mess
JordanThomasHall12 May 2020
Patty must have a new dress to be voted the best dressed at next week's school dance. She asks for $40 (about $333 in 2020), but Martin reluctantly gives her $20 ($166). Patty goes to the dress shop for a one-of-a-kind dress and becomes attracted to an expensive $79.50 ($662) dress that she commits to buy after running into her rival Sue Ellen (Kitty Sullivan). Pressured to upstage one another, Sue Ellen buys a $95 ($791) dress in front of Patty. Cathy wishes to wear her blue dress to a recital, but Natalie forgets to pick it up from the cleaners. She has Cathy take Patty's new dress. However, the operatic singer hits a high note that comically breaks a glass of dark liquid that spills all over the dress, staining and ruining it. Patty and Cathy unsuccessfully tries to sell and then return it before turning to a pawn scheme. Patty buys imitation jewelry that looks identical to her new genuine gold bracelet and pawns the real bracelet for $40. Martin sees the bracelet laying in the living room and decides to engrave it at the jewelry store he purchased it recently for her birthday. Salesman Mr. Carey (Frank Behrens) informs him that it is only worth "a dollar or two", but rectifies the perceived mistake and gives a real one engraved. Trouble only deepens.
